So Much for Dealer.....

I rang the dealer, and they said they would not even look at
the car for under $200. So they won't be looking at the housing.
And yes, I meant Power Steering Fluid, not Brake Fluid.......sorry

Huosing??

I hate this. I went to ********AZ, where I've gotten parts,
and when I look for housing it gives me the black cylinder that I already
have out of the ignition. My mechanic had shown me this massive piece he called housing, a big lead pipe looking thing, that's about $190. And I've seen tumblers with keys for $25. Which is a much better price than getting original from Mercedes. The Dealer wants $200 to tell me If I do indeed need new
housing.
Could I, If I ordered a tumbler, If I managed to install it, and it didn't work,
would that mean that I did need a new housing, but if it Did work, I would not?
When my mechanic put in the loaner tumbler, it worked fine until the steering
wheel locked up. Does that confirm that the housing is bad?
Thanks

OK...this is what he said I need

My Mechanic said I need this Valeo
Valeo Mercede Benz Steering Column Lock Assembly #1264620730
He said the housing was damaged. So he told me I need the above and
a tumbler. Is the Steering Column Lock Assembly "The Housing"?
Thanks
Confused

Just for fun, I looked up the OE Mercedes dealer part costs :

Steering lock housing - List $124 Best on-line price $93 (1264620730)
Ignition Lock cylinder with key - List $212 Best on-line price $67! (1234620379)

I am staying with my $0.00 solution

2 options

Under your contact information,

It says Send Mail Email OR Send via Private Message...
But I don't see how to attach pictures.
I believe someone told me how to attach pictures previously,
I can look at that. If there is not an easier way to
email directly to you.
Thanks
Linda

I remember someone (Diesel911?) says it is cheaper to buy (from dealer) the housing/tumbler/key as an assembly than the housing alone.

I like Graham's idea of rigging the old tumbler so that any key will start it. Who'd gonna know and who's gonna try?

It is hard to tell from good, in focus pics whether the housing it good or not, let alone lousy out of focus pics. I'd suggest spray it with some white lithium grease and see if it "un-sticks". If you can turn it with a screw driver you should be able to turn it with a good tumbler/ key.

Way to go LJ you posted pics! I'd be temped to try to clean up the inside before lubing it from what I can see. But you can't get anything like bits of rag caught up inside. Maybe wait for other opinions why getting better pics.

Thanks!

I will try to get better pics. In the meantime I called Mercedes.
For my car, tumbler is $212...A little more than I want to spend!
considering I probably have to buy the column lock assembly as well.
My mechanic said I have the buy the Valeo, the are the only
place that makes it. I have to look at Pelican Parts.

LJ I had sent a link a few posts above with pelican offerings. The more I think about it I like Graham's and Funola's ideas of the zero dollar fix also above.
