Better Pictures Maybe on Ignition
Hello,
Thought I'd post these new pics, don't know if they are better close up, but not sure what to look for, so though I'd post them. Thanks for looking! Linda |

In order in install another tumbler those innards need to be lined up in the same position the Lock Tumbler was in when the tumbler was removed. I don't recall someone mentioning this but it is also possible for something inside of the steering lock to be buggered. The inside of mine broke and I thought it was the typical lock tumbler issue.

Using a screwdriver, the rotating part inside the switch housing should be turned to the number 1 position. The tangs on the back of the tumbler need to be lined up with the two square holes in the ignition switch housing (this can be done by using the key to turn the tumbler) The spring loaded catch on the tumbler needs to be depressed to allow the tumbler to be inserted into the security bezel; the bezel and tumbler are now inserted into the housing as a unit, the bezel screwed onto the housing clockwise and then when tight, the bezel should be turned counterclockwise until a click is heard. The tumbler and security bezel are now properly in place.
It is almost impossible to damage the ign switch housing using a screwdriver to start the car. |

So I recently had a sticking key issue and took things apart.
Based on the pics, the center tab is the piece that locks the steering wheel. It returns to its locked position when you turn the key all the way to the left and pull the key out. In fact, pulling the key out releases the tab as it is the tip of the key that releases it and returns things to the locked position. So with the tumbler out and the steering locked one can assume that the center tab has reset to the locked position. To start the car, you want to turn the inside prong to the right. The center tab shifts to the right to the unlock position. Turn it so that it activates the glow, then crank as usual. In my situation, my sticking key was not the tumbler as my key movement was good when I took it out. I determined that there was a lot of gunk stuck in the center tab. The key typically goes in and the tip of the key rests on the tab. It then acts as a ramp when you turn so that you are able to unlock the steering wheel. If there is a lot of build up, it makes it difficult to mimic the ramp motion of the key as it is turned. Go on amazon and get a $20 tumbler set if you dont want to spend the $200+ for authentic parts. I can confirm that the one on amazon fits and works. I am interested in what Graham recommended as I thought the same thing. The only problem i face is that with the tumbler in my hand, I can't figure out how to open it up and release the core. Is there a c clip that needs to be removed? Anyone know how to do this? Graham? And finally, I apologize if I'm repeating what others have said in this thread. I only skimmed some of the responses.
