Opinion on S124 engine mounts

Engine is n/a OM606.

Trying to locate annoying whistle/whine and wondered if mounts may have dropped putting drive train alignment out.

Side shown is right hand side standing in front of car, this should show the most wear if any due to engine rotation.

..ta..

It does look a bit low - the only way to know for sure is an on the bench comparison.

I'm not sure if someone has done a handy what's the height of my engine mounts meant to be thread...

...but that might be misleading because they can be different not only for different engines but also different configurations (ac / no ac etc) - bit like road springs.

I have had a whine for about 100,000kms/62,000miles now. It's most noticeable when things warm up and at 80-90km/50-55miles per hr with the a/c on.

It's coming from the front or transmission- pretty sure it's not the rear.
Thought I'd mention it in case it follows a similar pattern to yours..

Part if the info on WIS relating to 124, 201 diffs, includes a tech update following complaints from customers.

To overcome diff noise they recommended fitting a small shim, without looking it up again it was around 3mm so not much in terms of height adjustment but perhaps enough to make a diff-erence..ahhhmmm..

Have your engine mounts been replaced?

Worth checking, good video on ************** giving a good overview on what to look out for..

btw, mine didn't move at all.

edit: not sure why *** out, but it's Mercedes Sauce dot com

David,

I replaced my engine mounts to try eliminate an idle vibration when engine was hot. The engine mounts were still in spec, just (as in you could just squeeze the ?14mm bolt between mount and chassis) so I replaced them with Corteco's but it didn't correct so I ordered genuine mounts and replaced again- it was still there, seperate problem completely. It turned out to be injectors; new nozzles and that was fixed. I know this doesn't help with your current whine noise.

I don't have access to WIS but if you find that tech bulliten regarding the shim retrofitting, it will be much appreciated.

Bit of progress this morning....perhaps..

Removed aux belt, damper and pulley set up. Waited for low traffic, went for a quick drive, no change if anything worse.

Jacked up one wheel and engine around 1/2 inches just to take weight off mounts. Started up, lot worse, sounds like the center bearing has gone.

Oddly enough when jacking up the engine it didn't appear to move, instead started lifting the chassis?

Two engine mounts ordered, will remove existing for inspection later today.

Ben, it's a bit wordy, also on another dedicated PC, in essence it relates to the shim (red arrow) above. Probably easier to pdf and email, drop me a PM with addy if still needed.

Cheers,

Mounts removed, one is completely shot, no fluid at all, the other not so sure.

Jacked engine up to remove both, replaced with wooden blocks, started up (car on blocks) - the whine/shrill noise changed pitch quite a bit, reduced by about half too.

It could be the output bearing from the box but as this too may have suffered from incorrect engine/gearbox angle due to dropped mounts.

Going to pop the starter off tomorrow to make bendix cog is functioning okay.

If the prop is removed, will it cycle through the gears as normal?

Just thinking out aloud, would it be easier to drop the gearbox instead of removing starter?

Props coming off anyway, so just bell housing bolts plus mount support (4).

The reason for mention is two fold, make sure I find this pesky shrill and 2nd, access to rounded off allen bolt for modulator.

Is it possible the TC could be touching anything, especially if bearing worn?

By chance I came across the following video - this is the sound to a T, in fact I thought it was my car lol.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGT2C4L8jCU

Visually it looks okay, i.e the rubber housing is not split or torn so you may pass this up on first inspection, or, as in my case just fitted a new one.

Searched everywhere but cannot find center bearing receipt, interested to see what brand it is.

Some good news at last, followed the screw driver approach seen in the video - stopped straight away, repeated several times just to hear the silence, music to my ears lol

It can't have done more than 200 miles since fitting, original receipt found too (June 16).

It's a Meyle part, going to cross reference with my OEM numbers to make sure correct one fitted.

Also checking WIS for correct installation although have fitted several in the past without any issues.

...phew!!

Pulled the bearing today using my newly acquired puller, works really well, very easy (told you it would come in handy Stretch, lol).

There's no visual sign of wear but he inner race has some free movement, vendor has offered to replace FOC if returned and proved defective.

I might opt for febi as this is a proper pain to remove/replace.

New mounts arrived today, pleased to say overall finish and quality look good.

Ordered new center bearing from MB but going to use the existing Meyle rubber housing.

Fitted the new mounts today, compared to old mounts needed a lot of upward movement to fit in.

Obviously, the pivot point (center bearing) is a long way down but there must be some incremental impact on operating/wear angle.

Don't forget the rear axle is fixed, so this may result in a dip.

If the motor drops it will cause the bearing in red to experience wear to the top side on entry, but reverse on exit.
