S124 OM606.910 pre-cat

Hi folks,

The rear half of my exhaust arrived this morning, just making a final check before ordering the down pipe with underside cat.

Posted this on an old thread in tech section, perhaps more eyeballs here.

Clogged Pre Catalytic converter..the fix

In essence are my two melon shapes similar to those described in first psot - photo courtesy yelodog4

My down pipe

That's the strange thing, the part number on EPC is melon-less, as are all of the non-OEM exhaust parts.

I'll fit the back half this week and poke my endoscope up the end to see if second or bottom cat is blocked, hard to tell but looks like original MB part so unlikely to be functional still.

here in USA the diesel catalyst for the E300D is a large 2 inlet and 1 outlet job under the car. Its also a very nice and handsome 1400 dollars

to make a cost effective repair I bought a standard diesel catalyst and had a custom/bespoke exhaust muffler shop weld it in for me, the additional bit needed to make it fit a MB is a Y piece ahead of the catalyst as it only has 1 inlet and 1 outlet. My total saving compared to the factory part was about 1200 dollars

Most states here wont care. e.g. mine where this era diesel just gets a safety check. I'll throw this one out when it clogs. To keep it flowing and clean its a good idea to thrash the engine once a week to cook it so it can burn off the soot in it.

Thanks, this is the common parts available either through MB or third party, as mentioned no one seems to know what the melons are, perhaps they are from another model?

Zulfiqar, i have been using water injection, good results so far. no idea if it helped with the cat though.

If yours is a very last year of the W124 wagon you will have 2 melon sized catalysts. Nothing unusual and can be replaced with the single part very easily.

Yep, last year '96 so probably using up any old odds 'n' ends in cupboards lol.

Tried the manifold bolts today, loosened off for when weather improves.

Fitted the full exhaust over weekend, very heavy, must be 70kg all in.

Several noticeable changes, firstly the heavy diesel exhaust odour has gone, second engine note is a lot more raspy but feels responsive compared to before.

I need to affix the bottom bracket after re-drilling new holes, as single loop piece supplied -

At low speeds it's a bit V8 worrberly, not 100% sure on this but nice and crisp response wise now.
