Truck is an early '02. They changed the body style in mid year 2002 and I've found that I have to order parts for an '01 or I'll get the wrong part every time. There were some changes beyond the body changes though I don't know exactly what they are but the engine/trans are supposed to be the same.

Does it have the common rail injection?

Nope! I just double checked my memory and the VP44 is both the high pressure pump (takes the fuel from the lift pump and boosts the pressure to very high levels) then distributes the fuel, sets timing, etc. So there is a bundle of snakes injection lines off the back of the pump and leading to the injectors. It appears that mine was the last year for that system so my advice may be useless for your truck. What I don't know is whether your lift pump is up to the task - if not, it'll fry your high pressure pump due to fuel starvation. I'm sue there must be on-line info on that.

There is so much info on the cummins dodge that it is completely overwhelming. Many of them have hopped up their engines too so what they need isn't necessarily what I need. I'm afraid its very confusing.

Quote:
1. Is the stock fuel system sufficient for a stock engine. If no, is there a FASS for your engine. (My friend in the parts business says not to waste money on a ddrp - direct replacement pump). 2. Do you need to monitor things like fuel pressure & EGT on a stock engine. If yes, what stats do you need. You might also check dieselram. Max knows these trucks. I'd let him work on mine but the trip from TN to CO is a little long. Do you have the common rail or 6.7? I personally don't know about either but will keep an eye out for info and info sources.

Its a 6.7 I assumed with common rail injection.

Common posts include "dead pedal" and 48RE transmission issues. You have a 6 speed. Those had issues but I haven't paid attention because I have the 5 sp (NV4500) and most of those have been fixed.
Dead pedal is frequently an injection pump issue on 2nd gens. See whether things have changed for 3rd gen. Also, decide whether there is anything that needs addressing as far as the trans goes.

I'm having coolers and a temp gauge installed in the tranny, increasing the lube capacity about 2 quarts.
What is meant by dead pedal?

Dead pedal is where you step on the go pedal and it doesn't go. On 2nd gens, the injection pump dies from lack of fuel and/or so many heat cycles of the circuit board in the IP (ie VP44). It could also be caused by the APPS (Accelerator Position Sensor). The 2nd gen was made before ULSD came out and fuel provided more lube. This led to the current procedure of adding 2-stroke.
Two-stroke likely isn't necessary in yours but a better fuel system may be required.
