Harbor Freight sells everything you need including the clamp on the right and the impact gun. Lots of control with the gun. The only thing they don't sell is the spring and scrap metal to hide behind. The junk yard has those. $20 should handle the entire job.

LOL.. exactly... that board is simply going to to make a different kind of mark on his forehead... without a reduction in the severity of the wound...

Lol, great pic!
I actually just had to remove the rear springs from the parts '92 300D I have and I bought the knockoff China spring compressor for $50 on eBay. It proved to be basically useless for the job (no big surprise) so I decided to unbolt the LCA bolt with the control arm on a jack and it was super easy, and very safe. With all the talk about how dangerous these springs are a little common sense can go a long way.. I've been taught they're super deadly and there's no safe way to do it without the $600 tool, but that's really not true. At least for the rear springs anyways.. have yet to do the fronts, hope the tool will be semi-useful for that.

Impact gun and spring compressors don't mix. Always use a wrench.
I picked up these compressors recently to replace the front struts and spings on the c320. I really like this design.

Doesn't bend, doesn't twist, expands to 28cm, 1" thick shaft with built in ball bearings for the screw.

Most spring compressors and pullers state not to use w/ an impact gun, though most shops do (time = money). I always pass a chain thru and keep taking up the gap. Safest is 2 chains since the spring could pop while you are fooling with a single chain.

WOW ! .

One of these dayze I'll remove my W123's front springs, I'd love to know exactly which manual coil spring compressor I need as I _won't_ be filing the body to allow clearance....

I'd like to replace the springs in my car eventually. I have a saggy rear.

This is the one thing that absolutely terrifies me.

Here's a video for you all to enjoy!

Unhappy Plain Old _STUPID_

At least he wasn't killed .

I'm called 'VWNate' because I was an air cooled VW mechanic, junkie, shop owner etc.

In the late 1970's one guy decided to flat rate the McPherson struts on a 1971 Super Beetle, when it unloaded it went through him and splattered his spine and guts all over the upper shop wall..... .

Not good .

It's scary enough with the proper compressor. While changing out the bushings on the front end, the compressor shifted slightly and made a pop when I was tightening it! The bottom plate wasn't quite seated on threaded shaft portion.

Needless to say, I had to take about a 15 minute break to get my composure and focus back!
