Being an ex rural farm boy I find this truck to be pretty if not beautiful .
I don't understand why the shortie exhaust dump, I like to hear my engine and so almost always modify the mufflers but also always run the tailpipe to the rear of the vehicle . Keep up the good works and proper attitude too .

Thanks folks, appreciate the kind words.
The rubber exhaust mounts are the same ones holding the rest of the exhaust system, and they've lasted just fine. That spark arrestor is much more weight though, I'll keep an eye on it for sure. Longer pipe heading towards the back would have required another length of flex pipe, more clamps/hangers/work/time/etc. I don't mind it dumping where it dumps, from a sound perspective I actually prefer it, everything else is just sheer laziness. No other reason. ![]() Two concerns. 1.) Before, my exhaust was just a chunk of pipe sticking out, not obvious it was anything different. That big shiny muffler looking device, which doesn't actually quiet anything much at all, will get more attention that I don't really want. It may get a black paint treatment. 2.) This is my winter driving rig, and I'm not keen on the exhaust blowing pretty much directly on that back tire when going down the road. I scooted the spark arrestor out to avoid some of that and also to make the drain plug accessible. Last thing I want is that tire being heated. Will see if that turns out to actually be a valid concern, which would definitely warrant revising and moving the tailpipe back farther. It occurs to me that I should pull that drain plug, coat liberally with anti-seize, and reinstall.

I'd do something to move the outlet. A small car with windows down is going to get noise / fumes.

Took it for a drive, sounds pretty good. Mellow, smooth.
You're right, it's going to need a turn down.

The turbo itself is a spark arrestor!

I'll probably put a turn down on it, but that location is essentially where the exhaust has come out for the last 44k miles. No one's complained? Which I'm aware is not the same as it's not bothering anyone.

Exhaust dumps in front of any tires is foolish no matter how cool one may think it looks .
I'd never suggest nor do that . As I said, it's a good looking rig to my eyes .

Would you explain why you think it's foolish?

Because as you already agreed : spewing oily exhaust on a drive tire (any tire really) is a foolish thing at best and dangerous when you ever get said tire wet after covering it in oily exhuast, Diesel or gasoline .
Common sense here .

What I actually agreed to was that HEATING the tire, reducing ice traction, wasn't good.
I would of course agree that oil on tires is bad for traction, but there's no meaningful amount of oil coming out the exhaust. I get way more oil on the far tire if I spill two drops when I fuel up. Again, the exhaust is in essentially the same location it's been for the last 44k miles; if anything it's blowing on the tire less now. It's been driven in snow(see avatar), driven on black ice, and rain. I'm in Oregon, rain is the default driving condition 9 months of the year here. No traction issues. So, I'm going to say 44k miles of actual experience trumps "common sense."

After some miles on the truck w/ the spark arrestor, I can report that it'll be pulled off as a general rule and only used when needed.
Less power, less responsiveness. More black smoke, ALDA is disabled and it takes longer for the turbo to start spinning now. EGT ~150F higher than previously while just cruising down the road at 60mph. MPG took a significant hit too. Adding an exhaust restriction, this is all expected.
