I did have to replace the o2 sensors at the cat on my 2008 ML.
Didn’t include that since these are wear items on any modern engine.

Since I have 2 642s that are at 155k and 188k, talk to me about the timing chain issue, what should I be looking for?

All cars break. I had plenty of expensive repairs on my older MB's....so far the newer ones have proven to be much more reliable (and way more fun/capable to drive)
Well, I owned my 2014 GLK250 for 5 years and had no problems in 50,000 km. But I would suggest you go read the MBWorld GLK forum where many owners post to find out what others experienced.

Never read about a sludge problem with the OM651, but did read many reports of failed NOx sensors (about $900 each and they often get changed in pairs), DPF/Catalysts, Adblue heater, Adlue tank and internal level sensors, Soot sensors, and other issues that give you the 10 more starts message that pops up. Many of those replacements in the C$3000 range.

Mostly not DIY jobs and often mis-diagnosed by dealers and ending up costing more $$$ than they should. A gasser has a couple of simple catalysts and O2 sensors. The Bluetec has emission parts that a gasser doesn't have and a cost many thousands of $$$ to replace.

I loved my GLK diesel and was sorry to see it go. But still have the old 300D

BTW, make sure you use an approved MB229.52 spec synthetic oil (e.g. Mobil 1 ESP X1 0W-30). Also drive car a lot on highways. The DPFs plug up when driven mostly city stop/start.

Just did an oil change in my 2013 GLK 250, now at 75K miles, I've done all the oil changes at the standard 10K or 1 year intervals using 229.51 oil. Took a look at the valve train through the filler cap, can't see too much but it looks absolutely pristine.

I also have a 2014 E250 with another OM651. Between the two vehicles I now have 129K miles of OM651 with the full-blown ad-blue system.

Total emission system issues to date are zero. I'm planning on driving both cars a long, long time.

did a full delete on a 2014 250 bluetec after the nox sensors took a crap and the dpf got clogged. no egr, swirl flaps, dpf, scr/adblue system. last i heard the car had another 100k put on it with slightly better mileage maybe 1mpg better. but the real upside was that the oil is significantly cleaner at every 10k change according to blackstone than before the work.

When you reset the service indicator on the GLK250, it still asks if you used 229.51. However, Daimler changed the required low SPash oil from 229.51 to 229.52 a year or two ago. This likely because of the many issues with sensors and DPF (or so my dealer told me)

Good luck with your diesels - you seem to be having better luck than some.

I loved my GLK250, but with reg gas at $1.83 and diesel at $2.5/gal, I at least feel better when I fill up our new non-Mb gasser

I've been doing oil changes around 5-7k on my GLK250....I use 229.52 certified Liquimoly 5w30 Low Ash oil.....so far so good.

I bought a couple of 12 packs of Mobil 1 5-30W with the 229.51 spec a year or two ago, I'm unwilling to not use it because of an updated spec, if Mercedes told me I had to flush it down the drain maybe I'd consider it. If some dude on the internet is telling me my engine will blow up unless I immediately switch I'm going to pass.

I'm intrigued by your comment about the cluster reset procedure not including new wording for the new 229.52 spec oil. Just for my edification were you expecting that the firmware in the instrument cluster be updated for all future changes in oil specs?

Cost of fuel are certainly not always in favor of the diesel but they are only one part of the experiences that make me prefer diesel engines. 600+ mile range, effortless torque and low revs on the highway are all very pleasing to me.

I wouldn't think that updating the cluster service display would be that difficult? You think those messages couldn't be re-programmed?

It actually should be done. Why ask the MB tech, when he/she does the reset, if the wrong oil was used?

Anyway, after reading many threads like this one, just glad to be out of the Bluetec scene. https://mbworld.org/forums/glk-class-x204/717501-first-post-glk-250-bluetec-cel-dpf.html

Thanks for the clarification, I'm glad we've both been able to make decisions we're comfortable with regard the OM651 and it's emission control systems.

Changed my fuel filter today on my OM651....took about 15 mins (could be done faster)....ultra easy, zero leaks, Clic clamps take about 5 seconds to install....computer/electric fuel pump automatically prime the new filter in less than 30 seconds, start engine, drive away. Far cry from applying 900lbs of torque to get the crush washer to stop leaking on a 617 spin on filter!....or diesel spilling everywhere changing any filter on the older cars....I spilled ZERO fuel. Oil changes are easy too.....so far loving this vehicle and the design!
