Poor man's gasket remover?

I have a few old gaskets I need to remove from a lawn mower so I can rebuild the carburetor assembly. 3m adhesive remover and other aerosol gasket removers are on the pricey side.....could I use a product such as Goo Gone?

How about scraping it with a razor blade? I think Goo Gone is worth a try, just watch for any metal reaction such as changing color or pitting. You can sand some surfaces clean by putting sandpaper on a flat surface such as glass and then sand the object in figure-eights and then reverse figure eights.

Good luck!!!

Look in the Dollar Store for oven cleaner *BUT* be aware there are two typs and only one is O.K. to use on alloys.... .

Lacquer thinner is the most potent solvent you can get your hands on.

I'd only use it with a respirator and nitrile gloves. It's nasty stuff.

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a only slightly used can of Goo Gone already and will give it a try the next time I take something a part that has a gasket.

I have a nearly empty spray can of CRC gasket remover but none of the local auto parts stores sell it. And I think the Goo Gone is cheaper.

Anyone tried a heat gun and 1" putty knife? Seems like that would be the cheapest.

Paint stripper would be my second choice. It's toxic but it no longer contains methylene chloride. It's usually 10-15 bucks a quart.

What I can remember from the past is that the Gasket Remover Spray came after they started using aluminum parts on Engines especially with aluminum Cylinder Heads and Intake Manifolds so that you would not gouge the precision surfaces with typical methods like a scraper or wire wheel.

For soft metal stuff like Carburetors (can't use much heat on the pot metal) even if you scratched the surface badly gasket sealant usually would take care of that. The same with say an aluminum water pump body.

The gasket remover spray is also handy around studs where you cannot easily scrap with out dulling the scraper on the stud. Spray it on and use a hand wire brush to remove the gasket material.
