Hi guys, 123 880 0923 crosses to 123 880 0183, which is the entire grille with the chrome surround. 123 888 0923 is the center of the grille (slats), without the surround.

update: got the grille insert from Germany. Very unimpressed.
As you’d expect, the heft is there and I’m sure it’ll last but the casting is very sloppy. 20% of the fins have drips and splotches on them. I gave it a couple quick coats of paint but it looks like I’ll have to sand it and start again. I’ll post some photos later.

Good lord ! those are defective, I'd never ship anything that bad .
The uro ones look O.K. but the quality of plastic used is simply crap ~ all they need to do is make a few pennies less per item and use better grade raw materiels .

I put the cheap URO plastic grill on my 1984 300D a few years ago (~$30). I painted it black with plastic spray paint and primer. It still looks excellent, and much better than the faded gray OE grill on my 1985 300D. I re-used the metal strips. I think they are stainless steel, so should be fine if not crinked. Mine even had slight bends from accidents which I tapped flat. You can polish stainless to look like new. You can also buy it new, as I recall it listed with the grill, for maybe $50 for all strips.

I'm sure that with good quality paint it will look good for decades .
That thing Sherm posted I'd not put on a $1,500 used car . We'll see how this shakes out .

Crap, now I'm confused. I was initially going to buy a URO grill insert but after hearing that they weren't good, I decided to buy an original one but now after seeing how bad that one is I might get that URO after all. I figure since neither of them appear to be that good, I might as well get the one that's cheaper. Surprised that the original looks so terrible.

I agree, you should buy the uro one and clean then paint it before installation, be sure to use good quality paint and let it dry out a while .

It's a lot better after sanding and a coat of paint, but noticed that one of the nubs the molding is supposed to lock into was broken (possibly during transit).
I'll try getting a refund/replacement, but I might be SOL. Given the opportunity to do this again, I'd buy the Uro assembly. I ending up spending about $120 total for just the MB plastic insert and the metal bits. The vertical strip was MB, the horizontal were uro. Unfortunately, I'll have to cut horizontal strips to size as they're all the exact same length. Could have spent $100 for the whole uro assembly, done and dusted... sucks when this happens.

Yeah, I think I'm going to go the URO route at this point. Quick question for everyone suggesting to paint the insert first... It seams that most of you are painting the inserts because you want the insert to be a darker color than the stock grey but I'm assuming that painting it also helps keep the plastic from drying out and becoming chalky, correct? I'm asking because I actually want to keep my insert the stock grey color but I'm assuming I should still paint it to help preserve the plastic, right? |

Correct .
My two OEM inserts came to the partshaus to - day, I asked them to open and inspect them before I go pick them up .

Fortunately they’re sending a replacement.
Re: paint color I prefer a darker shade of grey. I painted the inserts of my euro lights the same color to match. Has anyone ever trimmed these inserts? I’m assuming a hacksaw from the back, but is there a better way?

That's good, hopefully the replacement is better. Also, I think I might go with a slightly darker grey on mine now that I've givin it some thought. Black is just too dark for me. |

I suppose it depends on the paint color of the car .
Me, I like the light & airy look the light gray gives and would keep it were I to re paint a grille insert . So far I've never had any issues with the aluminum trims, they're not as good as the originals but even the originals get tarnished after three decades . I'd love to find a source for stainless steel insert strips .
