Fan / overheating questions

1982 300CD, the coolant was changed 3 years ago. When I idle for a while, like going through a drive through, the car will get hot (above 95) and I hear a fan come on.
When I get moving again, the temp comes down and the fan tuns off again.
It feels like the top hose is full of fluid.
Why am I overheating?

Sounds like classic fan clutch issues.

Yep, an easy fix. Just use a thin wrench, pop out the bolts, install the new one, and replace bolts. As I remember there is a proper orientation of the fanclutch so make sure you look when you take it out.

There are some videos suggesting that you soak the bolts overnight in Liquidwrench or something like that. However on my '81 SD I had no problem not doing this and the bolts came loose easily.

x3 for fan clutch. The electric fan howling is from the temperature switch in the head kicking it on to help with cooling since the mechanical fan isn't doing its job.

If the fan electric coolant fan is unusually noisy the bearing could be shot and or needs lube and I found a lot of bugs and dirt inside of mine with I took it apart.

I can't remember if the nut on the fan shaft is right or left hand thread. If you decide at some point to take it apart look up some threads on that.
