79 240D a/c belt tension
so I'm having a hard time getting an answer. I'm having trouble tensioning my a/c belt, it has a lot of play. Ive done a lot of searches, here and on google, and I keep getting answers for the a/c compressor located in a different location. My compressor is located on the passenger side top, above the alternator.
I tried loosening the tensioner pulley and move it around but the problem I come across is that the belt will rub on the vacuum pump. Is my style York compressor in a fixed location? can it be adjusted too? here are some pics to show the layout ![]() ![]() |

You are correct that is a York compressor, reliable but power hungry. The compressor is mounted with bolts that go through metal washers and rubber insulators, it is fixed not moveable.
To adjust belt tension the AC belt idler pulley bracket is rotated. Look at the idler pulley bracket near the bearing end for flat spots, find a wrench that fits the flats, loosen the idler pulley attachment bolts. Use the wrench on the flats as a lever to tension the belt and re-tighten the attachment bolts. I don't remember if there is a spot in the idler pulley for a 1/2" square driver breaker bar, if there is use that instead of a wrench on the flats. Good luck!!!

Sugar Bear,
thanks I think did just that and ran into the problem of the belt touching the vacuum pump, as shown on the second pic. I loosened the back of the tensioner pulley with a 19mm wrench and found a spot that is ok but still had some play. I think my next step is gonna be to cut the belt and go with a slightly smaller belt. |

If it hits the pump the belt may be too long. Loosen the adjustment, pull upward on the belt to remove the slack and see if it clears.
Try to get the correct belt by application. Good luck!!!

I have the same setup.
there is 2 positions that the idle pulley can put tension on the belt. rotate it to the other position. instead of it being at about the 4 o'clock position, pull it to 10, then rotate clockwise to tension.

Thanks for the help, I did everything that was advised, I ended up cutting the belt off since it seems like its just too long and was the wrong one.

so I went ahead and cut the belt and measured it. Measured 55 3/8 inches, from what I was able to find for a replacement, the replacement belt is 34 7/8, so yeah it seems like it had a random belt on there. Might as well replace all three then...

I know that's a York compressor but I'd want the correct 10MM X whatever belt on it .
If it slips and squeals you're going to be very upset .

Agree ^^^ the correct belt by width and length is important on this.

Verify the correct width also so that the belt sits at the correct depth in the pulley. This will greatly reduce slippage and squealing. IIRC belt specs are in the owners manual if you still have one.
Good luck!!!

Don't get suckered into accepting a 9.5MM belt....
Pelican did that to me and I'm still pissed off because I ordered 10MM ones . The devil really is in the details here, this isn't a '65 Chevy .

So after trying different belts, I found that a 54 1/8" inch belt was the one that fit with no slack. I didn't measure the width but i did compare it with the other belts, they were the same width and seemed to fit just fine into the grooves. I did do all three belts and without having to remove the fan, I installed the a/c and power steering belts before tensioning the alternator/water pump belt.
Gates wasnt available but I am going to order another set with all the correct lengths and widths and install those once those come in, this is just what was available to me and needed it done that same day. |
