Original spec is the 3.27 for the 300 TD with auto transmission. This will result in about 3000 rpm at 62 mph, which is quite short but original.
So if your speedo is showing 62 mph at 2000 rpm, something is wrong.
This is equivalent to the OM603 turbo end ratio with the 2.65 diff.
I wonder whether a 3.87 even exists.
Maybe something is not original here. Diff or speedo.
I recommend to doublecheck both and measure real speed via GPS.

My 300 D sedan with correct and original diff and speedo has about 2400-2500 rpm at 100 km/h, 62 mph and the estate has a shorter ratio which must lead to higher rpm at this speed.

Three years ago I was checking a 300 D (OM603 naturally aspirated) sedan with automatic transmission. The car was crap and in addition to that it had the wrong speedo installed (speedo of 300 D 5-spd was installed).
I have determined this at the first glance in the interior and it was confirmed during test drive: Speedo was showing much less velocity than it was supposed to because it was not matching with the diff.
Manual version: 3.46
Auto version: 2.87

Of course I didn’t buy the car
meant to type 2.87 in that earlier post.

With the thought it might be stuck I think I will put in a quart of Rislone and drive it for a while.

Day before yesterday the Mrs. and I went over to our #2 daughter's place. We were sitting on the porch swing. My wagon was sitting out front. A fellow came by very slowly in a newish mb e class. I noted he was giving the wagon the once over. I waved. He waved back.

I think he knew what it is and how old more or less it is.

Fun

I have purchased a six speed manual to install. It comes from a 2002 C230. I need a shift knob for it.

Woo hoooo!

I like it and will prefer the non turbo motor. Once I get the stick installed it will ring the three big bells for me.

The ticking is gone now. Rislone is the berries! (I also put a quart of marvel mystery oil in the fuel so that might have helped too.)

Very odd that the major ingredient in miracle mystery oil is reputed to be kerosene. Other components in it though may be quite potent.

It is both cheap and seems to have stood up over the years as having some general worth. Something in it is a very strong solvent I suspect.

Over the years I have run solvents through systems even on cars that seemed to be working well.. Usually there was still improvement from doing it.. Specifically noticed on older cars.

The beauty of the product is it is not promoted with a lot of hype. Plus remains low in cost.

I am a little concerned over the drier diesel fuel now lubrication wise. On our older diesels. We do have members driving them as primary transportation though with no noticeable failures of the injection pumps.

I scored a 1991 250TD in October. Right here in Texas in the same city I live. Manual. Revs awfully high all the time. It'll go 90mph easily, but it'll also let you know it's going 90mph. Runs out of breath just above the ton.
Mine has one problem; the fuel gauge or the fuel sender is faulty. It never reads right, so I just reset the odometer at every fill up and then remember to fill up when I get to 600km. I once, went 800km, just to see how far it would go and it started acting up around 520 miles (I track fuel economy with fuelly so I know how many miles it was even though my speedometer is in kmh.) and died. Filled it up with only 16 gallons, so there's something not quite right there. Theoretically, I should be able to go 600 if not 700 miles on one tank. (It's also got marginally smaller 205/60R15 tires instead of the factory 195/65R15s.)
Oh, and it was also facelifted. :/

I'll be looking into an OM605 turbo and six speed combo.

Congratulations on your purchase.

I've got a crack in mine. Can you tell me where you got yours and how the install went? I understand there's some trickeration involved in replacing the W124 windshield; it seems straightforward but there's tips and tricks one needs to know.

Today I took it out to my Indie's shop to look things over with him. It turns out the trans is set up for an electronic speedo drive. My 124 is set up for a mechanical cable drive. The fellow who sold the transmission to me says converting it is pretty simple, requiring a minicomputer and some wiring changes. The transmission mount is different too requiring some possibly a different cross member.

This is a bit intimidating to me so I am going to sell it all off and buy a five speed from a 124 diesel package. I am in the market for a kit with all the parts including bolts for the five speed conversion for a diesel including the speedometer.
