Any advice on installing vacuum pump?

any tips on installing a new vacuum pump i have a 1984 300d i am trying to put on a new pump but it seems to not want to line up with the cam in the block likme the piston or cam needs to be turned to line up its the correct pump its just not lining up together any help or advise would be great thanks for your time.

If the cam isn't where you want it, rotate the crankshaft until it is. The installation will be easier if the pump roller is in a cam "valley" when you bolt the pump on.

Also, you should take up the spring tension slowly, using several screws at a time, the same way you would tighten or loosen the pressure plate on a clutch.

If your timing chain guides need changing, now is a good time since one pivot pin is under the vacuum pump flange. Actually, there is a scallop in the flange to clear that, but pulling that pin with the vac pump on requires an offset base on the puller setup (bolts and washers work for me). But maybe forget it since you might need the engine apart more to get at that lower guide (fish it thru timing opening?). I never fooled with it since those guides may not be essential and more to eliminate slapping noise from a worn chain. Indeed, the hydraulic tensioner should keep the timing chain tight.
