w123.123 oil line part numbers
I'm trying to buy some new oil lines. I've checked all the part sites and think I've found what I need but I'm puzzled with an oil line from an '83 240D automatic transmission with a part number that's not listed on any of the parts catalog lists. 617 187 15 82.
There were several revisions specific to MY 77-83 but the bend, radius, length, and fittings appear identical to mine. I can see all the various version part numbers available for purchase online. I know Mercedes revised the part number for a reason but unlike most revisions, can't understand why or how. Does anyone know the reason for the revisions? |

Mercedes has always led the industry. First car, first car with seat belts, air bags, first to employ engineers with disabilites(OCD), and first to discriminate shade tree mechanics. I meet all the criteria for OCD but Mercedes have engineers that could redefine compulsive disorders and or justify a more acute category. I guess I'll make sense of it after I find the oscilloscope needed to rebuild my water pump.

Autopsy report
Am I getting warmer? I’m comfortable making my own using stainless pinch ear clamps with one of these. The others may be sketchy.

I had no idea there were so many different hose barbs .
It's 15MM ID hose IIRC, I changed all of mine a while back when the Classic Center still sold them .

There's an older thread that details the best brand to use in America....
Be sure not to use worm drive hose clamps ! . Good night .

Note that previous to finding the 15mm ID Hose I had used 5/8" ID Hose which was actually not a tight enough fit but did work with double worm gear hose clamps on each end. I am thinking you must have already seen the other threads on the subject. When I went to the 15 mm hose I used the oeitiker pinch clamps on the oil cooler end but had to use Norma worm gear clamps (2 per hose end) on the other end because the crimping tool would not fit in for me to use the pinch clamps. I have had no issues with either end of that.

I love Oetiker clamps and use them all but exclusively for heater hose and fuel fittings. If I absolutely have to use a screw clamp its ADA or Norma. That said all three are just brand names and Oetiker makes a wide variety of styles and shapes. I prefer the single ear made specific for PEX tubing(PEX stamped into the clamp). |

Anyway, the attached pic has the stuff on the Choline Oil Cooler hose. It is the same hose that factory made oil cooler hoses often have and the same. I used the Cohline 15mm Hose from Bellmetric, Choline 2633-1300 (part number); see pic. I bought 2 meters of it. The company Bellmetric sells it and a member said he bout the bulk choline hose at a Porsch dealer for less than the Bellmetric price.

Pretty much every truck stop knows a hydraulic hose repair place, they'll have spools of the correct size in stock .
BE SURE to ask for ENGINE OIL resistant hose, mot all hydraulic hoses are compatible with hot engine oil . "The Hose Man" or similar, all equipment rental places have sources too as their tractors and so on constantly need hose repairs .

The Oil temp can if I remember can go up to about 210 Fahrenheit. So the hose needs to also be rated for the temp.

If you don't have a pressurized hose specialist in your area, I've found some of the hot rod magazines have advertisements for hose specialists. Of course, we don't know the quality of their work.....the advertisements are usually in the back of the magazine....

What I find interesting is that in the various Oil Cooler Hose threads where people have tanking their hoses to a Hydraulic shop few have been able to have the whole job done at those shops and no one I can remember has said they were able to purchase any suitable 15mm Hose that they could do the job themselves with at one of those shops.
There are persons who have been helped at hydraulic shops when the used some method to change the connections on the Cooler and the Hoses. Something no one mentions is that in Hydraulics a 110 psi hose is a low pressure hose. Hydraulic shops are kind of high pressure hose places.

the choline line is garbage in contrast to Mercedes. That said I’m sure it’s just fine. Just about every hose manufacturer i’ve checked sells 5/8” in the states and markets the same size as 15mm or 16mm elsewhere. I’ll use the best if i can find it but the manufacturers make that very difficult. Ex. Gates Barricade Greenshield vs. Gates Polarseal II. What’s the difference? The latter is marketed as refrigerant hose the former injection hose. Both are barrier lined. Their literature says greenshield uses a thermoplastic liner wheras Polarseal uses a nylon liner. Nylon is a thermoplastic. Polarguard is rated upwards of 257°F and Greenshield 212°. Another example: Oetiker PEX clamp is a series 167 clamp. All their clamps are sold as metric. The 3/4” on is stamped 23.3mm. The big difference other than the PEX stamp is that they are one step wider and thicker than comparable diameter 167 clamp. I have loads of clamps and if i can find a suitable chunk of hose I’ll make my own. The hydraulics shop will cost more than a chunk of hose. By the way GATES stipulates two methods for their refrigerant line. One is the sleeve clamp like the OEM ones and the other is an Oetiker 167 clamp.
Buy from China and you can get 15mm teflon hose sheathed in stainless steel braid at half the cost of fuel transfer hose. Last edited by 240D.Bill; 12-11-2021 at 05:42 AM. |
