Post Top Speed

it's beyond impressive, I was expecting it to slow down and need third gear .

I remember when one could drive from San Diego to L.A. or reverse and the only speeding impediment was the CHP .

My how times have changed .

FWIW, the car was unloaded and I charged the hill much faster than I normally drive, you have to keep an engine wound up tight to use all the HP it makes .

87TDWagon, do you have a picture of your catch can set up? Where else do you vent the system?

Hi greg,
Unfortunately I do not have a picture of this on a OM617, haven't had one in over a decade. I do install them on all my diesels, and now that means OM603 and 642.

The catch cans are readily available as auxiliary add ons via many vendors and not expensive. You will need to figure out an attachment mechanism to the OE oil separator in the air cleaner housing, to feed the crankcase gases to the catch can, and then route the return back to the OE oil drain tube that comes off of the factory system or plumb it back into the intake stream. There are several threads in this forum of how tos for the 617 engines.

One final note on catch cans, there are some that come with a screw in dipstick, these are great because it allows you to monitor captured oil level without having to open up the can each time to do so. pull and read the dipstick and determine from there. Good luck

If you look on my profile, you’ll find photos of my aftermarket installation.

About halfway down the page.

Retro-fitting an oil catch can/separator

In regards to cleaning the inside of the intake of your 617 with any do it yourself methods I came across a video of using different cleaners for cleaning pdf exhaust cans , a related issue but for cleaning ash out of the exhaust side in 2009 and on engines . These clog over time and give a service light / running issues . Interesting findings , here’s some results found , some solvents were ineffective , what did seem to have some affect and dissolve strangly enough was dishwasher tabs for cleaning dishes . The formulation is vague mixing with water but had the best results on the buildup with no shown affects to the metal , not sure what this will do to aluminum , feel it’s a cheap experiment and safe to try in a garage / fumes .
