Bowden Cable removal/install issue; possible solution?

1984 300D turbo. I need to install a new Bowden cable on the car. Access is limited due to exhaust pipe which sits a few inches from where the Bowden cable enters the transmission. The exhaust pipe pretty much blocks the view of the bowden cable, as well

So, my Haynes repair manual says that if you remove the bolts from the U shaped strap that holds the exhaust pipe to the tranny, you can then move the exhaust pipe out of the way.

Quote from the Haynes manual: "Disconnect the exhaust pipe mount from the transmission, loosen the U-bolt nuts and then move the pipe out of the way. (photo)."

I also believe it may be helpful to remove the rear transmission mount to allow the transmission to drop a few centimeters which might allow better access to the Bowden cable. I'm also considering purchasing a video boroscope to better see the bowden cable.

All ideas are appreciated!

Here is a photo of the exhaust pipe mounting bolts I'm considering removing per the Haynes manual in order to move the exhaust pipe out of the way. Also, I'm going to spray the area with Sam's club purple degreaser, let it soak for ten minutes then use a 3000 PSI pressure washer to try and get some of the grease off before putting wrenches to it. The question is is doing this going to allow me to physically MOVE the exhaust pipe over a few inches to allow better access to the Bowden cable connection on the transmission?

I understand that by draining the transmission fluid and dropping the pain, it allows access to a "push button" from inside and on the right side of the transmission that can be pushed to hold the spring loaded "hook" up so the new bowden cable can be more easily attached. I was unable to find this information for the W123 300D turbo diesel, however found this video (fast forward to 2:50). Is the "push button" on a W123 300D turbo diesel transmission in the same location?

Where'd you source the Bowden cable? Those can be hard to find, unfortunately.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Removing that exhuast bracket is easy, and will get you more room. You may have to physically tie the exhaust over, because it will probably want to hang in the same spot. Also, you took a nice photo, but keep good track off all those bolts and grommets and washers, they are a bit of a puzzle. Have fun!

I purchased the bowden cable from the stealership just before they went NLA. I have a video/web link somewhere about a man who figured out how to repair the throttle end of the cable so it won't fail. When I locate it again I will post here to help out the forum members.

It still chaps me raw that mother benz shows so many of these parts as NLA. I guess they decided to become another Ford, GM or Chrysler.

OK, here is the link to the guy who figured out what looks to be a reasonable repair to the bowden cable. I purchased the same parts he bought from a local motorcycle shop for a few dollars. When I remove the old cable, I'm going to play with it to see if I can replicate what he did:

Thanks for the link! Seems like a good way to future-proof our cars since the cables are NLA

I bought the bowden cable from the dealership right before it became unavailable. I recall having a video or web link on how to fix the throttle end of the cable to prevent future failures. When I find it, I'll share it here to assist fellow forum members.

It's frustrating that Mercedes-Benz discontinued so many of these parts, leaving us in a situation akin to other major car manufacturers like Ford, GM, or Chrysler.

I keep getting the feeling that Mercedes doesn't want to support the pre-1995 era Mercedes models anymore. The problem that many have recognized is many of the pre-1995 mercedes cars are more reliable and last longer than any of their new offerings.

That has to present a major marketing headache to Mercedes.

Couldn't agree more.

I can't speak too much of the designs of newer Mercedes Automobiles, but I nod silently whenever reading/hearing (old) expressions reminiscent of "form follows function", "engineers over accountants" etc...

Yesterday helped a coworker change a low-beam bulb (2 pole) in his older '00 Audi, with cracks in the thin bulb cable isolation. Still a couple years (9) younger than my non-biodegradable-wiring-Benz. Why just don't make it non-degradable, make it right the first time, instead of getting tired of tossing and tossing...

Looks like the Hayne's manual lied...

OK, disconnected the two bolts connecting the exhaust pipe to the transmission mount supposedly "freeing" the exhaust pipe. no joy. I can only move the exhaust pipe a half an inch or so which isn't enough to get to the bowden cable connection.

So, watched another youtube video and decided to put some Kroil oil where the front exhaust pipe (part that connects to the turbo) to the rear section. I am going to let it soak awhile, watch some television this memorial day then try to loosen the bolts. This should free the exhaust pipe enough so I can move it out of the way to gain access to the bowden cable connection.
