OM606 > W126 SDL requirements

I have a full 98 E300 TD with 606 out on a stand that I will eventually swap into my 91 SDL with a mechanical pump.

1. Will the 606 mount directly up to the w126 722.3?

2. Which torque converter/flywheel combo do I keep?
3. What needs to be done about the shift points/bowden cable/Tachometer etc.?
4. I assume the ac compressor/bracket will mount up to the 606 without modification
5. what other parts might I need to steal from the W210?

Thanks.

I recall the sdl requires a different oil pan but the 603 should move over. Not sure how to fit the inter cooler some custom mods maybe required. The exhaust maybe fun also.

I’m not sure it’s different. In fact, I had a 606 oil pan installed on my 91 350SD.

The 606 pan needs a hole drilled and one threaded to allow the Hall effect sensor to access the flywheel. I think a windage tray may need to be removed too iirc.

Also, there’s a pretty substantial thread on this elsewhere. I do t know if much of the more involved stuff was due to wanting to keep a 606 as a 606 with a more modern AT or what. Believe it’s over at BW.

Seems to me that a 606 block/head/injectors with a 603 pump would be good. Not sure about the turbo and intercooler. But effectively make a 3L 603 with modern 606 parts if possible. Other than being a 4V engine, I’d think it should work like that.

I did see one thread where some guy started the project but some other fella finished it but didn't post any details at all. It was a white one I believe.
Send me a link if you have it.

Still curious on;

motor mounts/arms from the 606 into the 126
Will 606 torque converter mate up to 722.3
How to get correct shift points
Do I bring anything else over from the w210 i.e. glow plug harness etc.

Exhaust is a good point but that's pretty easy to sort out.

I will need to swap from vacuum to pressure actuated wastegate for the turbo and I will need to block off fuel heater port and potentially switch over to the 603 oil filter housing.

[QUOTE=Proctor750;4301912]I did see one thread where some guy started the project but some other fella finished it but didn't post any details at all. It was a white one I believe.

Still curious on;

motor mounts/arms from the 606 into the 126 - Use OM603

Will 606 torque converter mate up to 722.3 - NO, has clutch, use old one. Flexplates are the same except the teeth on the rear for original 606 sensor.

How to get correct shift points - If going with the old IP setup, should be similar connections to the IP for trans cable, though not sure on fitment of that assembly, don't remember what it looks like. Somewhere on my thread I had some pictures of the original setup.

Do I bring anything else over from the w210: Will require custom wiring, but at least save the engine harness for sacrifice on the 126 for glowplugs. I spliced the 606 harness into the 603 and use the 603 controller. May want to save the original computer, glow module, TPS, and trans harness in case you want to go with 722.6 or a DSL1 in the future.

There are other things like EDS temp sensor that you'll have to sort out since there are 3 coolant temp sensors on the original 603 and 2 holes on the 606, though you could swap the water pump housing over to get another hole. I cheated EDS with a resistor. Will require study of the wiring diagrams to get it all working perfectly. The 603 oil filter housing will have to be shimmed out or modified as well. The guy that did that long body had a shim made, I just ground off material until the lid cleared the intake.

You could also just swap the whole drivetrain and use the EDC pump with the original trans computer (EGS52) and a DSL1, but will require lot more than just legoing the parts together.

Here is the other guy that did the 606/722.3, which you already commented on:
https://www.benzworld.org/threads/new-project-om606-into-w126-lwb.1989953/page-2?nested_view=1&sortby=oldest#replies

Somewhere he had a thread under another username that had more detail, but it must have been deleted when he was getting ready to sell.

They guy that bought it on here is in this thread, apparently somewhere between somebody put a 722.6 into it: 722.6 transmission broke

Finally this is my build:
W126 short body OM606

Also have a mirror build thread on BW with similar information

Would recommend studying up on STD site for lot more detail on 606, ton of information buried in that site.

Look up the “shortbody om606 build” thread on BW.

Excellent info! Thank you very much.

I really have no desire to move to 722.6 although it's sitting in the garage with 160k miles if anyone is interested and I am already getting a mechanical 6mm pump built by dieselmeken. Keeping to nearly stock power levels so the 722.3 should suffice.

I will thank you.

The W210 is for sale if anyone wants it for parts. Body is quite nice, interior is fair wheels and lights are quite good etc. I snagged the diff, trans and motor but I will sell the EDC pump. 160k mile car.
