All new glow plugs, no glow plug lite!
My new 1983 non turbo 300D supposedly has only 85,000 miles on it. All 5 glow plugs were open so i changed them. Now the engine starts much more easily, but there is no glow plug light! Since i've rarely seen the indicator lites burn out,and this car supposedly has only 85K on it, wondering what i can check and hopefully avoid having to remove the instrument cluster. BTW, the new ones were supposedly Bosch, but made in India! I checked each one with an ohm meter before installing.
Thanks! |

Except for the minor troubleshooting feature of the pre-glow light as you don't need it if your engine is starting OK.
The light on mine went out and since it was staring OK, I ignored it and for no apparent reason after a bit more than a year the light came back on. When the pre-glow lamp started not working, I had no interest at all in pulling the instrument cluster out and possible crating other issues as a result of doing that.

The oil pressure hose is the biggest issue with 123 cars, other than that, the cluster is pretry easy to pull.
Bulb issue. As long as the glows are working, the light isnt needed... Mostly a winter need anyway. Be sure to adjust your valves!

You can pull the instrument console out a few inches without disconnecting anything and easily replace the lamp.

Check each of the new once’s through the harness to verify resistance.
I bet you didn’t install one wire correctly, and it’s shifting out. True story - my 1991 350sd had to have the prechamber pulled, so the GP came out. After all was done, I put the GP back on, wire on (I thought), torqued the nut on (the nut wasn’t captive on this GP wire). No GP light. Car started fine once, then wouldn’t start as easily the next. Found a bad GP reading. Turned out that #6 wire was not installed, and touching the block. The relay was self protecting as it was supposed to.
