Exclamation OM617 IP Timing Device Mark

Hi guys,

i just got an OM617.913 in from a Customer, who wants a complete rebuild of the engine, and allready did a complete tear down. Now my problem is that he forgot to mark the IP Timing device with the housing. Does anybody know how to mount it correctly in this case or how it should align up with the rest of the engine timing?

Going on memory but there is a mark on injection pump. Line it up to where it is supposed to be in regards to crank position. I do not remember the degrees (28 d comes to mind but do your research). Then install timing device. You more concerned about position of pump to engine versus timing device position. Post pic of front of injection point if you struggle to find markings.

Hey thanks for the fast answer. In the MB Workshop Manual it says that the IP Timing Spocket needs to be marked with ah pen. before removing. The Customer didnt do this. So im not sure about how the Timingspocket(The one in the picture with the blue marked bolts) for the IP needs to get aligned with the Marks on Crank/Cam. I allready aligned the pump itself but its not mounted yet.

As long as the spline marks line up on injection pump during install I can't see where timing device should make any difference.

Unfortunately, I don't have an exact picture of your one.

In the picture in post number 3 you see the splined collar on the drive shaft, and you see a space in the splines where 2 splines are gone above that you see a timing mark on the bearing cap at the 12 o'clock position.

On yours your timing mark is going to be stamped over in the about 10 o'clock or 11 o'clock position.

So you would get your timing chain on the engine properly installed and the crank damper lined up with the pointer at the specified degrees for your engine coming up on the compression stroke. All engine rotation needs to be in the direction of normal rotation of the engine. Turning it the wrong direction can compress the timing chain tensioner and cause the timing chain to bunch up and skip a tooth.

With the fuel injection pump splines lined up with the proper timing mark you need to carefully stick the fuel injection pump back into the engine so that the kidney slots are in the middle of the studs or bolt holes of the hold down bolts or studs and nuts.

That is timing sufficient to get the engine started but there is better timing needs to be done after the engine is assembled. But that involves rotating the fuel injection pump while it is in place.

how do I time the injection pump after losing timing

The other method depends on if you have the port on the side of the fuel injection pump to fit in a timing locking pin. They are fairly cheap on eBAy these days.

You can get some idea what is going on in post 2. The timing locking pin locks the fuel injection pump camshaft in place so it cannot easily move during insertion of the fuel injection pump. However, it does not lock it in place in a position of the timing marks on the front of the fuel injection pump.

This is going to kind of a mind bender.
On my 84 300D turbo when you are using the timing locking pin you turn the engine on the direction of rotation on the compression stroke and instead of lining the pointer up with the 20 something degrees before top dead center you keep turning past top dead center on the compression stroke and stop at 15 degrees after top dead center on the compression stroke.

You stick the pump in centering the studs in the kidney slots and blot it down. Before to remove the timing locking pin, add some clean oil through the hole and replace the hole plug.

The mind bender. Why 15 degrees after top dead center on the compression stroke? It has to do with the construction of the governor and or fuel injection pump cams shaft. It is just where Bosch put the sort of tang that sticks out.

Using the inj. pump locking pin

I am just adding this. That port and the tang on the camshaft is what is used on some of the other fuel injection pump timing methods. I am not going into those.

Anyway, the emission sticker on the car has the timing specs, if it is still there.
