Rear Axle Thunk....help

Last night my 1977 300D developed a thunking sound from the rear passenger side. It is only noticable when turning to the right or under acceleration.

I did a search and found some diagnosis that were close, but not the same as I am experiencing.........my best guess at this point is a rear CV joint, although the boots are still in good condition and there are no leaks from anywhere in the rear end/axle.

Help......and I know a dumb question, OK to drive.....for a while.

Check the retaining bolt at the hub -- if it is loose, the axle will work back and forth, making a thump.

The bad news is that the only thing I can think of that will cause the bolt to come loose is a bad axle.

Also, check the rear wheel bearing -- when these big double race ball bearing type wheel bearings go, they tend to thump --had one go bad in the Audi Fox 22 years ago (yikes -- I'm THAT old?) and it drummed on corner, they only symptom. Since I was planning a month-long trip to California, I thought was a good idea to change it!.

You can drive for a while (weeks, maybe months), but sooner or later the joint will come apart and cause real trouble -- the car won't move under it's own power, and the axle half flailing away down there, well......

If it is wheel bearing, the noise will become intolerable before it locks up.

Thanks PSFRED

I was hoping that my fellow hoosier would reply.

The sound is kind of a thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk, when I turn to the right. I was kind of hoping that it was the wheel bearing.

How do I get to it to check it out and is it a DIY? There isn't alot of documentation on this topic in either the Haynes manual or the Mercedes manuals.

Thanks and go big red.

jcd if it's the 1/2 shaft it made the same 'clunking' sound mine did-
altho i had a more serious problem.

puzzler - need help!

and

1/2 shafts

but i also had to replace the diff with a used one.
hope it's not that bad for you but would check the diff as well.
my 1/2 shafts were bad however the boots on both were intact, so it was a little hard to tell from just looking at them.

good luck

Well,,,,I didn't throw up yet.....

Differential fluid at proper level. No play in either 1/2 shaft. No play in either rear wheel. All boots sound with no cracks or splits. No leaks anywhere. Flex disc looks good. Put it on jackstands and ran it in drive for a little for a while and didn't hear a sound. Discovered rear brake pads don't need replacing (a bonus).

Now for a road test.

PS, how do you check the wheel bearing, Haynes is totally non-descript.

great news

jcd, that's good news about no play on either side. mine had 3-4 inches at least (that was the diff problem) . were both the sway bar links (plastic) ok?

Road Test was interesting.......now a quiz.

My teenage son.....yes I have one with brains..........After about two laps listening to the clunk, said that he thought it was coming from the right front.

He then stood in the middle of the cul de sac while I rode around him in a circle/figure 8, like an idiot, and he ran around next to the car, like a total idiot (at least I was sitting). He diagnosed it as coming from the right front wheel.

Now the quiz. I'll think of a prize.

What is the easiest and scariest thing to fix on the front wheel that will stop a clunking sound that occurs primarily when turning right.

PS, With this thread,,,, I officially retain my title, given to me by Michael Ribykowski (sp) as Village Idiot.

OK....try to solve the quiz, and there will be a prize.

JCD:

Loose lug bolts, have had it happen to me when I was in a hurry. I'm also a space cadet -- I managed to loose my 11 mm wrench this afternoon.

Tighten them up, don't drive with a loose wheel!

Keep that kid -- good ones are rare!

PSFRED is the winner

You are right about my son......he's a good one.

Actually, I didn't leave them loose. I had the right front tire replaced at a local shop. The put it on and I went to get a cup of coffee. After leaving the coffee shop, I looked at the tire and they had put the wrong size on. The replaced the tire and put the right one on, but evidently didn't snug up the lug nuts well enough.

Send me a private message with your address and I'll send you the prize. Don't worry, it won't cost me anything, and it's not worth alot, but you'll like it.

No problem

I over-reacted as well. I thought that I was in the market for a 1/2 shaft for sure.

I'm going over to the tire place this saturday and kick some ***.

JCD. We live in different villages. I hold the same title. I earned it by putting up a fence for the dogs. The basset and I are checking out the finished product and notice the yorkie cruising right through the pickets to go visit the neighbors. I had to take the fence down and put start over. Since then, they don't let me work with sharp tools unsupervised.

mccan I know the feeling........

Thankfully my house is in the woods so my neighbors can't see what I'm doing back there. You should have seen me trying to lay the invisible fence I bought at Walmart. What a job and it works great AND, training the dog was a riot. My sheltie jumped about 5 feet in the air when she got her first, and only, shock.

PS, do you know why basset's are so long.
