1/2 shafts

just a heads up guys, one of the main suppliers for rebuilt 1/2 shafts for '84 300D's (and the years nearby) A1 Cardone in Philly just does not have any more left. They were selling through Advance Auto/Partsamerica.com for about $122 dlrs with a $60 core refund (each),which you prolly all know is a great price. Anyhow yesterday it was confirmed factory 'back order' and nobody knew when/if they would be avaialble...
So, back to the drawing board on the search for 1/2 shafts. Success! Found 2 available through a CarQuest shop (local) who had only 3 in the state of CT. They also had 3 in NY state. Bottom line $130 net each (they charge a $90 core each!! so better save those old ones!)
Looked like a topnotch recondition job though.

Hopefully they'll be installed this afternoon and will be able to get dieseling again

I'm amazed! Between myself, my wife and my two kids we have about 800,000 miles or so in 123 diesels and I have NEVER had to replace a half shaft. They were designed for the horsepower of the gas engine, so the diesel just apparently can't kill them. I guess I was wrong about that statement.

Have a great day,

I replaced mine because the boots were gone (literally). They weren't showing any signs of problems but it was obvious that they were going to fail on me at the worst time, it was inevitable.

thanks replies

yes, well, i guess 18 yrs of service ain't bad for any part - i have only had the car for 7 yrs so am not sure about anything done to it prior to that as there were no records available- am quite sure though the shafts and diff were original. see other post 'puzzler-need help' for the whole background and some pics.
