In the spirit of confrontation, I say turnne1 doesn't get past my driver's side door in a quarter mile run. His car is a lot heaver and I don't think that 3.5 makes up for it in power by a longshot. I am even willing to take my car to a track here in MD to find out. As to the fastest diesel, I say it's between the 87 300td or td however that goes (10.3sec 0-60)and a 99-00.

I do. I own the 1998 E300 which was tested by Car & Driver magazine. It ran 8.8 seconds 0-60; somewhat slower than MB spec. Top speed was 130MPH, governor limited. I can't recall the quarter mile time. It's probably faster now...

I don't have the fastest car, but I feel that my car is quick for what it is. It seems alot faster than the other non-turbo 300D's i test drove. I think it alot of that has to do with the fact that it is a coupe, and from what I have read, they are a little quicker.

I would love to drive a 300SD, its interesting that a car with only 120hp can be so quick... One word, gearing! You know that a 300SD was quicker than the 280SE counterpart....

(0-60 in under 19 seconds, 1/4 mile in about a minute a around 75mph....)

I almost feel like I’m cheating by saying - No Contest

I almost feel like I’m cheating by posting to this thread.
Mine is a E320CDi Avantgarde Wagon
I am afraid that M/B deprives the USA of the one car that could cause a resurgence of Diesel Powered Car’s to happen overnight.

I must say that the use of the Bosch CDi system in the MB engines is a major advance.
Except for the first 60 seconds in the morning it does not even sound like a diesel even when idling.

Take a look at the factory performance figures and weep.
194BHP. Maximum Torque [Lb/Ft] 346@1800-2600.

This is not the whole story. The only reason why the 0 – 60 time is not a lot better is that it takes just a little time to get started. However acceleration from anything above about 15 - 20 mph is blistering.
On of the catch phrases, when I was young, was “there is no substitute for cubic inches”. Very true. But what the cubic inches, in the massive V8’s of the day, gave was torque.
Now take another look at the torque figures for this engine. A massive 347 ft lbs from 1800 rpm and up. Compare -
Almost 50% MORE TORQUE than the V6 Petrol E320 petrol engine.
The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish (007’s Car) only delivers 400 ft lbs at 5500 rpm.
The latest 500 SL has 340 ft lbs at 2700-4250. Less than my 320Cdi.

Whilst I will accept that Raw HP matters, you can’t take that in isolation.
Think about the bhp that your diesels have and compare them with the cars you can keep up with.
Interesting – What.

I have just changed my car from the one in the picture at the bottom to a 2002 model in Brilliant Silver.
I was going crazy trying to keep the Obsidian Black car clean. I will post new pictures as soon as it stops raining in the UK.

I would say that the ASR is an essential on this car, if the road is damp and your are "pushing on" a bit. At all legal speeds the torque comes in instantly and you feel the back end twich slightly and get a flash from the ASR light.

I have eaten a fair number of BMW's and petrol MB's off the traffic lights.
The best was a Porsche 911 Turbo driver who must have thought I was easy meat.
He took off for the first 200 yards very rapidly and then backed off.
I went past him like a missile and he had to really had to give it everything he had to regain his credibility.

I always hope that the other drivers realise it is a diesel from the badge on the back.

By the way I found out a while back that I have a 2 speed, IN REVERSE, gear box.
I had to back up a long way and after I got to about 10 - 12 mph it changed up.
I was amazed.

Specification on the Silver car is –

Optional Equipment. Factory Fitted
-------------------------------------------------
Electric drivers seat/headrest/steering column + memories (3)
Electric passengers seat
Heated front seats
Leather seats - Anthracite
Mercedes Audio 30 radio/single CD + Auto Pilot (Navigation) system
Metallic paint – Brilliant Silver
Parktronic system
Rear facing seats leather
Xeon Headlamps
Sun Roof Electric
Wood/Leather Steering Wheel
Automatic anti glare rear view mirror (3)
Speed-sensitive Parameter steering - quicker responses, and more direct gearing

Optional Equipment. Dealer Fitment
-------------------------------------------------
6 disc CD changer
Locking wheel nuts
Chrome Headlight Bezels
Chrome bonnet air intake
Chrome tailgate handle
Hands Free Cellphone System
Chrome Door Handle Recess Plates

Reliability, touch wood, on the Black one was outstanding in the 12 months and 15,000 miles I had it. I had a couple of false malfunctions that’s all.
My major problem is that I do tend to “Drive” it as it deserves and my tyre consumption is fairly high.

Only really went flat out once. On my way back from South of France recently, on the A71, I had a totally clear stretch of Motorway with a view forward of about 8 miles. Nothing in site and dead flat and straight.

I gave in to the temptation and topped out at 145 mph, maybe 146 mph.
Just about what MB claim for the car. Rev counter still had about 200 revs to go to the red at 4600 rpm. I had a new set of Pirelli P6000 just before going to France so had maximum rolling radius. I can only say it felt damm fast. It was just eating the miles up.

Door to door Beziers to Bristol (UK) was 1071 miles driven.
Used the Channel Tunnel to get from mainland Europe to UK.
Just under 29 gallons for trip. Average 37.1 mpg.
Average speed for journey was 62.8, including some coffee stops and the Tunnel.
Took just over 17 hours in total. Just like sitting in my office chair.

BMW 530d comparison

I have only had 1 traffic light "Grand Prix" with a BMW 530d. Unfortunatly we both had to back off when we caught up the traffic ahead of us.
I was about half a bonnett ahead at the time. So inconclusive.
Looking forward to a real try again soon.

I have had a run against a 330d and it took until 60 + mph before I moved ahead and pulled away.

I find that the range from 0 - 20 mph is where I loose out on other diesels.
I expect it's all the weight I am carrying around.
The E320CDi is about 200 Lbs heavier than either BMW.

I have roundly thrashed a Petrol 530i SE. But even BMW admit it is not as fast as the Diesel.

Bill and Leathermang,

Thanks for the kind words regarding Eduardo. God I miss that car soooooo much!! It did get rusty by the end of my ownership period but I still consider my selling that car one of the biggest mistakes I ever made regarding cars!! I wish I had it back!!!!!! Since Bill bought it from me, I've had probably four or five other turbodiesels (no W116 though), and none of them ever came (or come) close to matching that awesome feeling of being behind the wheel of Eduardo. It ran incredibly smoothly at 110mph (yes, it would go 110, we checked it against three reliable speedometers) and it just felt so right overall. Brakes, acceleration, steering, suspension.....

Now I'm sad....

I am in league with TXBill and Aaron, the 116 SD was almost perfect. Very quick, great shifting, and a dream at speed. It's very hard to explain, but I have never been as content with or as attached to any car, and I have had many. While the 116 SD may not be at the very top in any single category of measurable performance, it is near the top in almost every category and is a truly happy-making bit of smarts and parts. I would swear that some old Kraut at the factory was so pleased with this machine that he decided to house a piece of his soul in each of these 116 SD's (something more than metal keeps me connected to this big old smelly beast [insert mother in-law joke here]). It's just a shame that the rust never sleeps...
