Thanks, -Kurt |

If the car has been sitting for 2 years, you might need new brakes and rotors, I let mine sit for eight months and that's what I needed. You already know about getting new tires already

Might help to get yourself some diesel purge, especially if it's been sitting for a while.

will she run?
Ktang,
Does the engine start? I don't know the history of this car, but knowing the old dog will turn over and fire up would be a comfort and a NO. 1 priority prior to dropping what may easily be a $grand$ or more with radiator, brakes, tires, etc. Assuming she purrs. I'd start with: some good oil, Rotella or Delo, 15w-40 (unless your in AK) Add an oil filter to you list. Also air filter You also may want to do some research on this but I would be reluctant to suck 2-year old diesel fuel into my new fuel filters. It may have water, algae etc. maybe not, I'd un-do the hose under the tank (by the differential) and spill some into a jar for a good look at it. Also, this is just a tip, but if she is currently not running, do not use starting fluid or (ether) during your trials to bring her around. Ether is like kryptonite is to superman. good luck. dave |

I would without question replace the thermostat and be suspicious of the brake system, i.e. the master cylinder and the calipers, for safety purposes.
I would also run some Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase because I believe it does a good job neutralizing and dissolving rust and other bad things from sitting for a while. I would also drain the tank of fuel that's in there and not replace the fuel filters until you run another tank of new diesel through the motor with lots of detergent in it, like lubromoly purge (but the direct method, tapping into the fuel supply) and maybe some algea eater chemical too. Have fun, Adam bush |

I'm kind of confused by your list. Is the radiator leaking? There is no need to replace it unless it is leaking or plugged.
As Bill said, there's no need to replace ANY parts unless they are bad. Replace the lubricating fluids, drive it a little and see what gives with it. My 240D sat up about that long after my son parked it and went off to college before I took it out of moth balls and started driving it again. Except for a few things that I replaced because they needed attention, such as a bad windshield, I just put in a new battery, started it, ran it down the road until the oil temp was up, changed the oil and began driving it. I did that on Saturday and drove it 89 miles to the office on Monday. Unless the car was setting in salt water, I would be surprised if brakes need anything except the normal flushing that they should get annually. Good luck, |

If you aren't sure about the history of the car (if it will actually run or not.... why was it left sitting two years?) I wouldn't drop any money on a radiator until I got it running. If you're sure it will run that's a different story. You aren't going to kill it by starting it and running it a minute or two without a radiator.... this way if there is some major problem (broken timing chain, spun bearings, etc.) you aren't out the money for the radiator.

Runs, and there is No radiator! ACh!
Hi,
Yeah, I started it up, rigged in a honda radiator or something from a junkyard (which leaked crazy) drove it home...everything seemed fine..some weird ghost noises (i think the brakes and whatnot) but it eventually went a way...maybe to return once i slap in the filters (after running some diesel treatment, and fresh gas through) I orderd the rad today along with the mounting kit and a bunch of other misc stuff...hoses, saab gaskets..blaaah...255 bucks OUCH. We'll see.... The car was sitting for 2 years because the owner passed on and the fam didn't know what to do with it, eventually they decided they need the garage space for winter and sold it to me........2 years of waiting around and me buggin them...HA! Thanks, -Kurt |
