$1.49 the other day here in Atlanta...We usually have very low fuel prices compared to other places. Lower taxes on it. I wish that applied to a lot of other taxes around here!
It's still ridiculous. Diesel is SO much cheaper to produce...it's a BYPRODUCT of gasoline production, for pete's sake! They say that they tax it more because of the "extra damage that trucks do to the highways"...I say hogwash. What about all the economic BENEFITS trucks bring to a state's businesses and consumers? And the extra tolls they pay? And the extra costs of permits/licenses, etc.? What about those of us with diesel burning cars that do not cause any extra wear on the roads, and cause LESS pollution and gas-burning cars? Damn, people can be stupid. OK...stepping down off my soapbox again. I didn't intend to get so carried away with that one.... :p Mike

Diesel has topped to $1.95/gal here in Gainesville. I went to fill my car up on Friday at this station I never fill up at and the price was raised 9 cents from the day before when I checked on it. I really should'a kicked myself in the a$$ for not putting it in the day before. So instead of paying $1.64/gal I had to pay $1.73/gal, it's the first time it has ever taken me more than $20.00 to fill my tank.

Adding kerosene.
Here ye...here ye:
rickg and KylePavao and the rest of y'all. In your Mercedes Benz manual (if you have one) the specifically mention the addition of kerosene during bouts of extreme cold . Kyle, I know about your difficulties in the cold. Do I correctly recall that you went and adjusted your valves resulting in cold starting improvement? Anyway, acording to someheavy equipment operators that I know, the addition of kerosene will REDUCE the amount of lubricity in the fuel. This can have a negative impact upon your injection pump(s). To remedy this, I add some 2 cycle(chainsaw/ motorcycle/ outboard) oil into the fuel tank prior to the fuel (mixes better) along with some power service. The powerservice is good for the cetane boost and gelling and the 2 cycle oil is DESIGNED to be combusted. As they say, little trouble w/ ash and clogging injectors etc. Another (oil) additive which is benificial for gas and diesel is Marvel Mystery Oil......I have used this stuff for over 20 years in a multitude of engines with success. You see....a littlebit of EXTRA lubricant to the top end of the engine can always help....Disagree if you must.... Keep those diesels humming! spo out. |

All you guys keep whining like little babies.....It is going to get worse. I wish diesel (and gas for that matter) wan't as high as it is but I don't complain. I was in Italy in summer of 2000. I drove a nissan turbo diesel minivan the enitre trip. I was paying 2000-2200 lire ($1.00-$1.20) for a LITER of diesel. Let's see......approximately 3 liters to a gallon........that is around $3.00 for a gallon of diesel!!!! About 90% of the vehicles there are diesel. Lighten up fellas...it is not so bad here.
Ask yourself some questions...... How much do you pay for a gallon of milk?? (we have a never ending supply of milk) how much do you pay for water??? (some people buy bottled water) $1 for a 16 bottle of Evian doesn't sound outrageous how much do you pay for orange juice?? (we grow alot of oranges in the US) One more question?????? Bottled water buyers........ Pronounce Evian backwards.

vwbuge,
You're absolutely right, in fact I think you are being generous because it's closer to 4 litres to a gallon. The US has some of the lowest fuel prices in the free world. In fact, adjusted for inflation gasoline and diesel are cheaper now than back in the 80s. The recent rise in the price of motor fuel has nothing to do with taxes. It's all about the price of crude. Nobody wants higher prices but get a grip, it could be alot worse (and I would agree WILL get worse before it gets better).

The Hess station in Brielle, NJ is around 1.46 - 1.49. Never had a problem with their fuel.

Hey Mike...where you finding diesel for $1.49???
My local Chevron I usually fill up at has been raising prices almost daily and this morning, it's up to $1.69.....THE SAME PRICE AS PREMIUM GAS!!! I don't understand here......I haven't been using diesel for very long but from what I've seen, diesel seems to follow gas prices but it stayed somewhere around the price of regular unleaded. Now...not only has it followed gas prices, but it has increased in price so that it's at the same price level as premium unleaded.....I'd LOVE to hear petro companies justify this!!!!!!!!!!! Did diesel all the sudden become more expensive to produce?!!! Chris '85 300SD |

I don't wanna hear it!! Comparing the US to Europe is an apples-to-oranges comparison. Europeans have access to superior mass transit systems. They commute, on average, much shorter distances to work. Geographically the distances travelled are much smaller. This results in far fewer miles travelled for the average European. Here in the States the opposite to all of that is true. I really wish there were more options for US travel but the car is king here. Increase in European fuel cost is less of an issue as they have alternatives and even if they choose to drive the increase in cost is not near the exponential increases we will see here. RT

I'm surprised that a European has not chimed in to tell of their $6 and higher fuel prices. Most of that is tax.
How much of the price of each gallon is tax, both Federal and state in your area? Have a great day, |

RWThomas,
You are pretty much on track about transportation in europe. Paris is an excellent example. You can go anywhere you want to in Paris and quickly. You just hop down a hole to the Metro and jump on a train which comes along every few minutes. If you want to go a another large city in Europe, you jump down a hole with your luggage and take a train to the North or South station and jump on one of the big trains that constantly traverse Europe. There are two reasons our fuel is so much cheaper. For one the heavy taxes in Europe subsidize the the mass transit systems. The second reason is, the cost of fuel is subsidized by the Federal Government in the US. Our whole economy is built around the sale and fueling of automobiles and Detroit and especially the oil companies are not going to let that change. What if those subsidies were channeled into alternate energy sources. I can dream can't I? I hope there isn't anyone out there who still thinks we live in a Democracy. What we have is a two party system. Powerful lobbyists like the AMA don't care who wins; they slip a hundred thousand dollars into the pockets of both the democrats and the republicans. Their only interest is to keep third parties from messing with things. When Bush senior was running for re election, he came to the Bay Area for a fund raiser. Did he go to a banquet hall in San Francisco to get a bunch of donations? No he went to the private home of a wealthy oil baron in an affluant town. I better get off of my soap box. See ya, Peter
