air while purging

I see much concern about getting air in the IP when doing
a purge. Would any possible damage occur or is it of concern
because of problemwith restarting??? Thanks!

I suppose you could do some damage to the pump by not having fuel in it, but the biggest trouble will be the no start condition until you get all the air out of the pump AND the fuel elements and lines. Takes forever, especially on the later engines without hand pumps.

purge

I did mine to and at the end i pump cuple times the hand pump and it start very easy. I was careffuly to put a ruber end on the pipe which brings diesel to pump because of diference of elevation betwen the fuel tank and the IP will leak diesel continously from the pipe. verry INPORTANT : i did bnot finish all the liquid from the purge botle because i did not whant to bring air in instalation.
i hope this help

It took forever to get my 92 300D 2.5 Turbo restarted after changing both fuel filters. My mechanic wasn't on the ball enough to fill the new filter with fuel, so we had to cycle all that air. Drained and recharged the battery about 5 times. Be sure to have a rapid battery charger on hand!!!!!

I don't think it damaged anything on the car, it seems fine. Maybe the starter is a month or so closer to death.

Purging is next on my list!

The 601 and later MB diesels don't have hand pumps, there is no way to re-prime if you get air in except crank. No bleed on the pump, either.

Always fill the filter with fuel or diesel purge, etc, or you will have serious trouble getting it started!

Someone told me that for quicker priming of the 60x engines crack the fitting at the main filter outlet and crank until fuel leaks out. Then crack the fitting at each delivery valves, then each injector. Tighten the fittings as fuel leaks.

I don't think I've had my SDL starter running for more than 10 seconds at a time.
