Window weather stripping...

Well, I changed all the outside weather stripping for the four windows on my 300D. It took about 45 minutes per window. The old stripping is cracked and disintegrated and the old metal in the rubber is fused into the clips. A little liquid wrench and a screwdriver and hammer combo cleans it out. The you have to cut down the new stripping with a hacksaw to size it. I have had a water in the rear passenger footwell problem for awhile and I hope this helps. The under hood and sunroof drains were clean.

How much were the weatherstrips and where did you get them?

I replaced mine two days ago, and it took 45 minutes for both windows on my 300CD. It was cracked and split on my car, but it wasn't that bad. I think the weather stripping installs slightly different on a CD though.

I bought my weather stripping from PartsShop, and they were $13 each, but they cost more on a coupe. I still need to replace the inside stripping, and they are $20 each.

I can't remember about the cost. I bought them last year but was too lazy to put them in. I didn't replace the inside stripping as they seems ok. I'm glad I did the outside. In a poring rain, I could see the water going into the door. I also saw the rust, dirt and road sand pebbles inside the door from the years being unprotected.

What is this weather-stripping? Is that the rubber thing at the bottom of the window? The window channel? The door rubber?

Thanks.

It's the rubber thingy at the bottom of the window, when they get old and cracked or sometimes the clips come lose and scratch the glass like they did on my car.

I find it odd you had to cut or trim anything. All the Mercedes parts come ready to install. Either you got a shoddy part, a generic replacement, or you cut something you shouldn't have...

You might have somehow got the weather stripping for a 300CD, which is longer, and this is why you had to trim it.

I thought the sizing was odd, and they are a pain to hack. 123C, did you have to do any trimming? Well, on the performance product.com graphic, they don't even list a part for the rear window trim and the windows front and rear are different sizes.

I didn't have to do any trimming. It was an exact fit for the W123 Coupe. As for the rear windows, I will need to ask Phil about part number so I can order them.

The weather stripping we got for my brother's car had to be cut -- it was supplied in a single length, just a bit long for the rear door, much too long for the front. MB factory part, too, so I guess cut to fit is the order of the day. Probably makes it possible to supply one part for a number of cars, fits the longest application exactly, must be trimmed for the others.

Makes a big difference in noise, too!

Interesting! Usually the EPC mentions something like "To be modified upon installation" if that's the case, possibly along with a part number roll (superceded). But as long as what you install matches what came out, that's all that matters! And yes, I put in a new driver's window glass seal on my 124 and it eliminated the pesky wind noise! It's soooo quiet now.

gsxr,

All mercedes weatherstripping is not cut to length. Take W123 fuzzy's for the sunroof. The EPC lists them as 115-XXXXXXX. Take out your old W123 part and it is the same, but much shorter. Makes much more sense than inventorying multiple parts. Same with suspension, mercedes stocks the latest W124 linkage-which maybe a 210 or 211 part.

Michael,

Thanks for the info! Guess I was wrong there. All the pieces I have bought have been exact fit, but apparently on older vehicles they are supplying some cut-to-fit parts as you describe. I'll file that away in my brain for future use...

Thanks again,
