hi mercedes lovers, i bought a 300TD w/ a none working tranny & i just had it running today.. when i installed the tranny & install all the needed parts, i start the engine. after i started the engine & take it for a test drive, the engine has a lot of vibration on it & the propeller seems to make rattling noise, what do you guys think is the cause of this??? any leads?? and how to fix this problem. thanks in adveance..

Check all your motor mounts. Bad or misaligned mounts can cause lots of vibration especially at idle. Correcting this on a diesel can make you feel like you have a new car. Assuming all its moving parts are sound, and no blades are coming loose, your "propeller" (fan?) may only be reacting to the vibration.

I believe these drivelines are balanced and if you get them back together out of sync then you will get vibration fom them. Also checking all your flexdisk connections to ensure they are correct and the center bearing mount to ensure that it is not out of whack.

I am just throwing things out here and may not be on target but that's where I would start anyway...

Oh, and the motor mounts as someone suggested but that should be less noticeable at speed.

Check the heat shield or metal cover on the engine mounts.... mine was loose and making a tinkling sound... only accidentally found it was loose when I touched it on some other activity....

rattling, part 2

The alternator bracket on my 84 300TD is rattling like crazy- the whole thing will need replacing, as it now flops around and makes an incredible racket- might be something to check on yours. Keep in mind the bolts are tight, but the mount/bracket is worn, thus letting it move around with the normal vibration of the engine.

You say you just installed a transmission? There are several possible sources for rattling after that job. Best to attempt to isolate at least the area it comes from.
The flex plate bolts can get loose in there and cause a terrific racket. Don't ask me how I know that.

I told you not to ask...
Might have something to do with the first auto transmission I ever had the priviledge to install. Been a while, but I recall learning some new words that day. My mother told me they were not good words either.

Like leathermang stated, I would check to make sure it's not your heatshields for the exhaust. I had a terrible rattle on my 500SEL and found out that the heatshield for the cat convertor was only being held on by 1 of the 2 rivets that hold it in place.

It was very embarrassing to say the least. Here you are sitting at a redlight in a nice MB vehicle and the car is rattling like some ghetto cruiser. Good thing I had the dark sunglasses.

Talking

well guys, i figure it out what causing the sound, it was the "SHIFT LINKAGE" it was hitting the flex shaft, the thing why i figure it out is because i took out the propeller from the tranny and let it run w/out it and still the sound is there , so i went underneat the car and saw the ROD that was hitting the FLEX disc.. and then i took off the rod installed it the right way.. after that, i started the engine and a job well done, its fixed & took it for a test drive and ran smooth as a MERCEDES... im so happy w/ it...

i still got some work to do reguarding the door locks and some stuff... now i need help to fix these problems .. so any suggestions on whats the 1st step to do in troubleshooting these..

thanks a lot guys maybe w/out this forum i cant fix this car right
