Oil chain question 617

Does any know of an oil pump chain for a 617 that has a master link.

All I have seen is a full chain which requires removal of the oil pump sproket from the crankshaft or, possibly, lowering the upper oil pan.

I do not want to do these, if they can be avoided.

My father in law broke the timing chain, or the oil pump chain which took out the timing chain. I have gotten it apart (I've had my 601 apart a couple of times just for kicks). I cannot get the oil pump chain on the crank sproket and the manual calls for "drastic" solutions.

HELP!!!!!!!

The car is a 300SD, an '83 (a turbo). It is in pieces in my garage, and I want to fix it for my father in law (it has been a work in progress for him for 15 months -- now, I just want it done).

As for my 601, I took it apart first because there was a tiny oil leak where the front cover, the block and the head meet. I could have left it alone for miles, but I took it apart to get rid of the tiny leak. As I was cheap, I did not use MB's sealant for the front cover and it leaked. So.....I took it apart again this time assembling the front cover with MB's sealant.

Anyway, it is now about 150kmi later and the leak has not returned. It is generally free of any leaks, and even the AC works -- although i am not gonna add my post or $.02 to the recent AC debates (although I have some qualifications -- ME degree with a focus on thermo and cycles, a 609 cert and experience with R-12, R-134a, Duracool and GG's R406 product).

On the 601.. ok,, at least you had an excuse... (you said " for kicks").. That WOULD be sick...

Doing sealing jobs is not where you want to skimp on ANYTHING. it will come back to bite you , as you have observed....

It was not a debate on the AC threads... some people just needed more convincing than others... You are about the only person with Credentials... and you did NOT comment... that is classic....

I will see what I can find tomorrow in my manuals... at 15 months it is not too critical on speed... LOL...

I had my FIL review the manuals on this topic. He told me what should be done, but did not show me the specific manual cite. I agree with you that it is specific......time to remove the upper portion of the oil pan........

Thanks for the info.

I am sorry to be the bearer of the bad news.... but you sure would not want to have to take it apart again 20,000 miles from now for the same catastrophic failure...
