Best way to ship a block
I've been offered a block for my OM603 by a friendly forum member. He lives in Washington state and I in Michigan. How much does a block weigh and what is the best (ie cheap) way to ship it?

I had an engine assembly shipped to my house. It was just wired to a pallet and shipped regular frieght. The frieight company did charge a few extra bucks as I could not give them a business to ship it to that had a loading dock, but the whole cost was still small.
The tie down was not elaborate. They just used some baling wire, or some rebar tie wire to fasten it to the pallet. Used and old pallet at that... Just call some freight companies. They should be able to handle it if you can deliver it to their facility. |

If both of you are near large airports, the best deal, hands down, is Forward Air. You have to deliver it to their depot and pick it up from their depot but they are much cheaper than truck freight. Had a whole engine shipped from Florida to NY for $125. Shipped quite a few canoes with them.

Michael:
I have raced whitewater slalom (open canoe). In fact I won the National tandem Master's class at Wasau in 1996. Haven't raced in a few years although I have friends who are vey serious open boat racers. Are you a decked C-1 paddler or are your C-1's open flatwater? I used to paddle C-1's in whitewater all the time but I don't paddle enough any more and my knees can't take it so I mostly paddle open boat nowadays. I have a Shaman that I use quite often. Kerry

I learned ww in a gyromax.
I've got a race boat which is 94' world cup boat. Can't remember which model-it's not a batmax. Other boat is a playboat which I'll probably sell. I just like the acceleration and feeling of "max" boats better. My friends are Jim and Susan Herring. Susan races O-1 for years. She raced for years a green "edge". I've spent many of weekends with them in SE rivers. I know they attended Co and Wasau. By far, them and another couple of friends and parents were the only big things that made Texas a hard move. Employment dictated a change and I love my job. So, now we have to travel to WW. Michael

I know Jim and Susan very well. We used to paddle together a lot. Although I don't think I've seen them since Wasau. Susan was paddling the very first rotomolded C-1 ever made (Sage?? by Perception) on the first river trip I ever did in Colorado back in 82. She's the one that got me thinking about C-1's. Jim used to paddle an ME back then.
I almost called them the other night when I read in Canoe and Kayak that Frankie Hubbard had died. They really liked his designs. Your right that Susan paddled one of his Edge's for quite a few years and the last time I saw them she had a kevlar Viper. I have a couple of Gyramax's. My wife likes to paddle one and my 8yr old daughter gets the other when she's not in her kayak.

Wow,
That's a big loss. Frankie was very nice to me. I remember after the 96' olympics stopping by his place. Impressed by brother to no end because the racers were all there having a bbq! Always stopped by his place just to say hi. I've got to call them. Yea, I remember Jim and Susan refering to the Sage as the original "maggote". I met them in 9?2. I think that yellow viper she had was an very early Frankie built boat. Either than or Rodney Morgan. It was built stout for creeks. Jim's still got the ME. Heck, I think they going to have to get a bigger house to fit the boats. I'm probably an open boater at heart, but love the edginess of C-1's. My knees are not going to keep it up forever-that or maybe I'll fix my outfitting better. Small world. Michael

Marc,
It was a bit more than I thought it would be too. I was hoping that someone here might have other options.

No. I thought for that option, the unit needed to be delivered to the depot. The gentlman is nice enough to give me the block and I can't ask him to deliver it to the shipper for me. Do they have a pickup option?
Maybe I can get a local transport to deliver it.

In my case it was cheaper to pay the seller $100 to deliver it to the Forward Air depot and pay the Forward Air shipping cost than going by truck freight.

The next quote (Midwest Motorline) was for $286.84 + $35 pickup fee for 400lbs.
They were refered by the company selling the reman 603 engine on eBay.
