Congrads Tom,

Did you check it again after the tooth shift? You should be slightly late now. If you are, the only way yo get it right on is to either put in a new chain, assuming the head hasn't been machined, or to put in an offset key. Also remember to never rotate an OM616 or Om617 backwards, because you can bend the chain tensioner rail.

Not sure how the cam got out of time. The previous owner (I'm the 3rd) thought the original owner had some head work done for some reason. I'm guessing it was reassembled incorrectly. However, I thought about the tensioner, also. How do you diagnose that? I don't hear anything that sounds like chain rattle to me. Of course, I'm the guy who thought it was running pretty well when it was mis-timed.

The idea on the oil tube wasn't mine. I picked it up from Mitch Haley on the dieseltech list at mbz.org.

Thanks for the help and ideas.

Tom,

If the chain tensioner keeps the chain tight from the internal spring when the engine isn't running, its OK. When the oil pressure comes up, the tensioner makes the chain even tighter.

I could feel resistance (spring like) as I lifted the sprocket up to the camshaft when reinstalling, so I guess I'm O.K.

Thanks again for all the help and ideas.

I see this post vaulted me into senior member status. My 100 posts seems pretty paltry compared to folks like P E H , Jim, Peter or leathermang with 1000's of posts. Shouldn't there be a super senior or Zen Master or something status?

You mentioned noisy on the rh transmission tunnel.

On US cars with A/C, it's commonly the grommet is missing or not seated where the a/c lines come through the firewall.

Might check yours sometime and see if you have any sunlight coming through the firewall. Most W123 need some repairs to firewall grommets due to age and it does make a difference in noise level.

Great to hear you got the timing fixed!
