92 300D rear outer control arm bushing

I have to replace both rear outer control arm bushings. I know that I will need a special tool to remove them.

1. What does the tool look like?

2. May I use the tool to put the new bushing on?

3. Do I have to tie up the spring with 1200lb rope?

4. Any other sugg.

Thank you

Nick

The tool is a ball joint press. It required making a few bushings out of tube stock to move the old bushing out carefully. Replacement is easier yet care must be taken to not rip the sealed bushing.
On a lift the control arm was propped up with a stand to hold everything in place. The only thing removed was the bolt holding the bushing to the arm/wheel carrier.
It is not a do it yourself job.

Nick, assuming we're talking about the bushing that is in the bottom of the rear wheel carrier:

1- It will look something like the photo at this URL: http://www.SamstagSales.com/SirTool/stm_0085.htm

2- I believe the proper tool will both remove and install the bushings. If not, you should be able to beat the old one out with an air hammer or something similar.

3- Never use rope to tie up an MB coil spring unless your life insurance is paid up and you don't mind the possibility of getting killed. Treat compressed coil springs like a grenade with the pin pulled. Either rent the proper MB spring compressor, or you may be able to remove it with a couple of good hydraulic jacks (REAR ONLY).

4- Inspect all the other links carefully and replace anything else that's worn, while you're working back there.

Tony,

Nope - not yet. I plan to rebuild the whole rear suspension of my '87 in the next year or two, and will probably buy the tools needed when I'm ready to tackle the project...

Cool update on rear lower control arm bushings

I have taken the lower control arms off the 300D. I used a jack to support the arms until I removed all the bolts. I then lowered the jack and the spring came off without a problem.

I am having the bushings done. I tried everything without a movement. I am also doing the frontand rear flex discs. The driveshaft was taken out in one piece.

I will post pictures soon.

Thank you to all who wrote.

Nick

I'm planning to rebuild my entire rear suspension this winter. Has anyone been able to R&R the rear outer bushing without the special tool, or by improvising something?

I took them off and went to a press shop.

They charged me $15 to take out the old ones and press the new ones in. It was worth the money.

Put new shocks while you are at it. If they have not been replaced in many years.

Luck

Nick
