Ignition Timer Timing??? 82 300 SD

I have an 82 300 SD. Had timing belt off but don't know if car is timed properly. Lined up crank at top dead center and put cam shaft on the mark but I dont know if the crank was at the compresson stroke or not. Does it need to be?
Also, does the injection timer need to be positioned at a specif mark? I did not see any marks nor did I find any instruction in the manual. However, the manual told me how to set the IP. Help!!! Rich

:p..... always ten seconds behind!

There should be a lot of posts that describe timing... some in pretty good detail. Use the search feature would be my suggestion (I've never messed with timing so I don't know anything about it)..... it may be hard to find the answer you're looking for though but I bet it's there somewhere. If not, someone will help you out.

You need to set the crank & cam in synch, then set the injection pump as described in the manual. The timing device should not matter - it's the pump that's important. At least, that's how it is on OM603 engines, and AFAIK the same applies to the OM617.

" at the compresson stroke or not"

It does matter, seems to me (thats the way it is on my 616) the cam lob on #1 would be up and off to the the right on the compression stroke. The pump would then be installed at the 24 degrees BTDC mark with the mark alined on the pump. Do you have a Haynes at least?

If the cam marks line up with the crank at TDC (which I think he did), then they're OK, and you just need to get the IP installed correctly per the procedure in the manual. If you're lucky, your pump might be able to use the lock pin tool... certain 1982 models can, others can't... the data is in the factory OM617.95x engine manual.

Warning, warning, warning!!!!

Couldn't help myself but based on the questions I am very concerned...

When rotating the engine to TDC to align the cam and crank at TDC you can easily hit the valves with the pistons and bend a valve or break a valve tower! Gets kind of costly when just changing a chain.

Someone pipe in here, can you tighten the valve adjusters enough to prevent the valves from hitting a piston!
By tightening I mean you turn the adjusters down (clockwise) to where they do not hit the camshaft if possible.

TDC on the cam and crank need to be established before setting the two in sync with the chain.

The IP is then timed with the engine at 24 BTDC.

Always rotate the engine clockwise while standing in front of it otherwise the timing will never match due to chain slack.

On a 617 the best thing to do is pull the cam followers before messing about -- this keeps all the valves closes no matter what the position of the cam.

If the valve timing is OK (it will have compression), pull the IP, set the engine to 26 degrees BTDC, align the marks on the IP driveshaft (hashmark on the shaft, mark on the retainter ring by the srews, upper left corner looking at the front of the pump, missing spline aligned with hash mark) and re-install.

Pull the pressure valve out of hte #1 pump sleeve and attach a drip tube, set the pump so that fuel drips at one drip per second or less at 26 BTDC and tighten down. Turn engine around two revolutions and recheck, then install pressure valve and re-install the injector lines and you are ready to go (unless you bent some valves).

The injection timer just advances the timing like the centrifugal advance weights in a distributor, relative position isn't important. IP is splined all round, it will go in any position on the timer.

Peter
