Ignition Timer Timing???

Ignition Timer Timing??? 82 300 SD

I have an 82 300 SD. Had timing belt off but don't know if car is timed properly. Lined up crank at top dead center and put cam shaft on the mark but I dont know if the crank was at the compresson stroke or not. Does it need to be?
Also, does the injection timer need to be positioned at a specif mark? I did not see any marks nor did I find any instruction in the manual. However, the manual told me how to set the IP. Help!!! Rich
