Steve;
Can you ask your friend where he gets his parts? My 409d has the 617 with a 5 spd. Not as much of a dog as the 616. In fact I think it is quite peppy, but its top end is only about 70mph. I don't think I'd want the 616 4spd for US driving. They're fine in Europe where distances are shorter but a little short winded for US Interstates.

I had a 84 240D which was rated at 65bhp. MB developed a OM 616 with 72bhp for commercial vehicles like their Tempo Traveller. This two engine were basicaly same but with different IP and higher 130psi rated injectors. The 72bhp engine developed 1000rpm more than the 65bhp one.

I will ask him about the parts when I see him next. He travels allot with that little yellow camper van. I wish I had payed more attention to what model it is. Wow a 617 with a 5 spd, nice. Do you think you would go to Europe and do it again?

Gurkha

Seems I remember that with the Jimmy 71 series you could boost the HP with higher pressure injectors but never new that applied to MBs.

Steve:
Thanks. Definitely do it again in Europe. Been looking at Mercedes motorhomes again on German Ebay recently. I have the 409d here and it needs some body parts so I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive parts source. They're pretty rare on this side of the Atlantic. There is a really cool Mercedes van/bus on Ebay at the moment.

I don't understand the '409'. On mine it means a 4 ton chassis with the 617 engine (90hp=9). I don't know what '9' would mean on a 4 cylinder 1971.

I didn't know the injection pressures are different on the van engines.

The manual for my 1979 240d rates the 616912-10-105179(motor number) at 62 bhp.

Well the fuel pump is a different one, the governors are different and so is the callibration.

BTW: the OM 616 turbo with the TX-18 is no slouch and even with a all steel tank body weighing over 4800lb it takes off good and goes up to 95mph.

Very interesting, too bad we never see that stuff over here. Did you ever send over any 5 spds. I think you said they were still making them in India? I spent some time traveling around India. I was in Bombay when JFK was shot so it was a while ago when I was more interested in browsing Grant St. that looking for transmissions

Thats nice, 25K and I love the color. I dream about driving by some house with something cool like that sitting out front with a for sale sign in the window, wonder what it will go for. The van owned by the guy around here must have been a delivery van as it has few windows, which is the type I would like, not that I would turn down the "Queens" ride.

Stevo,

That was a long time back and you would be surprised how much has changed since then, some for better and some for worse. The 5 speed is available here and I havent sent any yet as no one has ordered. If someone is interested would be glad to do so. The e-bay link you have posted doesnt seem to work.

Yes that was a while back, I was all of 19 then before we worried about holes in the ozon, aids or computer chips in your car crapping out.

The link that Kerry posted worked for me which should be the same. So what would a 5 spd box cost delivered into the US, I wonder.

I asked Gurkha about the 5 speed back when he first mentioned it. The price was something like $1700, unshipped. So hopefully you understand why I could not justify one for my $500 car.

There are quite a few good 'breakers' in Europe. I'm somewhat familiar with some in the UK (because my French and German are really bad). If you are serious about wanting a 5 spd, do a search on Ebay and include all countries. I believe I have seen at least 4 or 5 5spd transmissions for sale (some quite cheap) in the last six months.

I wouldn't mind having another 5 spd but I admit the real reason would be to have an excuse to go to Eastern Europe or western Europe for that matter and poke around at the "breakers". Wow that would be fun, get a bus tour for "scavengers" together, lunch and dinner at pubs then to the breakers first thing in the morning. I even think my wife would go.
