I have it working now on a P4 with XP home edition PC and 2 CD drives. I don't notice a performance difference from when I had it on a P3 with Win2000 with disc 1 in a CD drive and disc 2 on the hard drive. You don't need special software to run EPC split that way.

Then how do I do it? I'm sitting here with the B&H install version, on 2 CDs, Sept. 2001 edition of the EPC. Anyone got this version that can help?

Mike

Run setup.exe on disc 1. Select the server option then select the option to copy only disc 2 to the hard drive. Disc 1 will have to be in the CD drive when you run MBNA from the B&H program group. That config worked for me on a P3-600 with Win2000.

You need an additional piece of software that creates virtual CD-ROM drives. Check http://www.cdrom-emulator.com/. It works like a charm and it's a snap to use.

Thanks guys! Looks like I was opening the wrong file... the readme on disc1 said to use the install.exe which had the B&H logo. Never worked. Disc 2 is copying to the hard drive as I speak.

Much appreciated!

Works great, with one exception: can't pull up a parts list for 1991-1993 300D 2.5T. Put in chassis, select engine combo, and instead of going to the main parts directory, it's as if you hit "enter" again and it goes to model info. Can't pull up any parts for the car.

Any ideas?

Lovin it otherwise. Lots of items aren't found on the price list or PartsShop, but it's better than nothing.

Lots of learning to go...

If you want this to work properly, uninstall, then install the CD-ROM emulator, then reinstall, but do not take the option to copy to hard drive during the install.

Mike, press enter instead of providing a VIN at the WDB prompt then select your car from the list. That works for me to get 300D 2.5 info.

Ron, it worked fine for me without emulator software and only disc 2 on the hard drive. It might fly with everything on the hard drive but I've never had it that way. Running with 2 CDs there is a lag when the CDs spin up after selecting a section or part call-out. The 91 300SE I sold was even less responsive

There is no lag, because all of the data is on a hard drive via two emulated CD-ROM drives. There are many versions of the EPC, and I have 3 of them -- none of the three that I have will run and provide complete data access as you've described. That may be why your version is stumbling when asked to retrieve data the way it was meant to.

Sixto: doesn't work for me. The 2.5T info seems impossible to get.

I'll try the emulator tonight. I'd rather not use CDs anyways... too much of a hassle (though my hard drive will scream at me for putting more stuff on it!)

I was running my EPC from twin CR-roms until one CD-rom decided it didn't like to work with the EPC disk any longer. I have since used a virtual CD drive system, CDSpace. It is a trial version that works fine. Both disks are on the HD and there is zero lag. Only complaint is that I have to change my screen resolution every time I run the EPC.

Hello fellows,

I have a recent ( bought this year) genuine EPC (W124) from Mercedes .
It's only one CDRom and I find it pretty good. It runs on an old P2 and Windows 98 without problems.
My mechanic showed me how to "bypass" the filters in the system : when you see in the filter window a code, push F7, this will give you the filter menu with the different filters. No 8 says "No filter".
So you will have access to information normally not accessible for a given VIN or WDB number.
Saterday I worked on the WIS of my mechanic for 3 hours. He warned me but I didn't believe him : what a PITA ! Instead of electric diagrams, I got only headache !
I ordered the W 124 WIS on CDRom. I sincerely hope this will working better
than the WIS at his garage with "all" the MB types on it !

Danny

Hey Guys,

I finally got around to doing the CD-on-disc thing. Got 2 imitated CD drives, with each holding one of the discs. Program starts up and runs fine, but once again, I can't get the 91-93 300D 2.5T. I've also found that I get the same problem with 300Es and more (still have yet to try them all) where it skips right ahead to the model description and never shows you a main menu for the chassis parts.

Anyone got any ideas?

Mike

Mike, did you ever get it figured out?

BTW - I don't understand why so many people have trouble with the EPC. The only version I ever had to use virtual drives to make it work (or leave both discs in two physical drives) was the Feb-00 version, which IMO was screwed up. Both the Sep-01 and Aug-02 versions work fine when copied to hard drive, and I've installed them both on probably a half-dozen different machines (with W2K Pro) with absolutely no problems at all. I suspect it may conflict with other software, I wonder if that's part of the problem (I was installing on relatively newer/clean systems). Very weird.

Fisherman does have a good point - the EPC is picky about the OS. W2K and XP Pro are your best bets. XP Home may require virtual drives. And so far I don't think anyone has gotten the Aug-02 to run on 9x/ME, but numerous people have made the Feb-00 and Sep-01 versions work on 9x/ME with either virtual drives or both discs in the drive. I strongly recommend using W2K if at all possible. Can't figure out why Mike's install on W2K was so difficult...!
