Are diesel fuel and #2 home heating oil the same?

Just an academic discussion mind you. My oil supplier says home heating oil is not suitable for use in an automotive diesel engine because the refiners put paraffin in it. He cited filter and injector probems in cold weather.

I was always under the impression that diesel fuel and #2 home heating oil where virtually the same except for the red dye.
