Most fuel at fill-up or longest distance on 1 tank?
Just wondering.
The other day I put 18.1 gallons in my 87 300TD. Millage was not great. Had 421 miles on trip odometer. 23.25mile/gal. Not great. I am happy. Ever since I replaced my fuel tank with the small dent, I have been able to go the distance. I was surprised that a small dent could displace 4 gallons from the tank. Henry

Wow I'd kill for 23mpg on my gas Toyota. I hope the Merc gets high 20's.

You should get 26-29 on the SDL, depending on condtions and driving.
Most I ever ran was around 500 miles (Hollywood Fl. to Jennings Fl, about 5 miles from the Georgia border). Don't remember the fuel amount, was about 29 or 30 mpg. Peter

I thought the early W124 Diesels had the standard 18.5 gallon tank.... Does the original posters car have a larger tank?
I drove my 91 300d 2.5 turbo from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to Augusta, Georgia last April. It went 618 miles - I ran the last 50 miles on reserve just to see if I could make it to Georgia (and the lowest fuel prices in the nation BTW) only to find the fuel prices in Augusta were HIGHER than about 300 stations I had passed in South Carolina.... Oh well. I got something like 37.5 MPG for the tank - I remember being pretty happy with the trip. Tim |

I have been able to squeeze in 21g after almost running dry. Not having a working odometer, I have no clue at all what my MPG is.

We generally get in the 1000 miles per tankful range with these VW B4 TDI wagons. One guy has logged 1400 miles on one tank of fuel. I suspect these wagons are the champs in miles/tankful in North America.

556 miles for 33-34 MPG in a 1987 300DT (my record).
Passat's don't "realistically" get 1000-1400 miles. That's driving 50-60 MPH for ideal fuel economy. If I drove 50-60 MPH in my 1987 300DT I'm sure I'd get better fuel economy. RC did you get a Mercedes?

I got 500-600 in my VW TD's in good shape, non TDI. That went up when not screaming at 70mph, they were geared for 55. The gasser trannys helped, but still. 13gal tank, hard to get it full too.
I seem to get around 400 in the 300D, but I don't think I've ever put in more than 17gal though. I hope it improves. edit/ Looking at my fuel records, I've never put in more than 15 gallons, and it was showing 1/8 of a tank then at 446 miles. Fuel gauge is funky.

When I bought my SDL, I drove it down to Miami from NJ and got 600 miles to a tankful. Not bein familar with the car, I didn't trust the fuel guage so 600 was the limit. It showed that it still had 1/8 of a tank left.
It averaged about 31 mpg.............

I routinely go 530-550 miles between fillups... I get 27.5-30 mpg consistently. I know I could stretch it out more because I only put in ~19 gallons to the top, but I dont trust my fuel gauge, since the warning light comes on early and the needle jumps a bit. This is with a 70/30 mix of 70 mph and 45 mph. No appreciable city driving.

My first tank was 400 miles @ 17.6 gallons (22.7 mpg). The window sticker says 22 city/23 highway, and I average 50/50 city/highway driving, so I'm fairly pleased. My second tank was a little better at 23.2 mpg.
One of these days when I go on a long road trip, I'll try for better fuel economy. Since the car has a 23.8 gallon tank, I'll try and run the current tank down to the reserve light, since I trust the gauge now. |

Not sure if it's the MOST I've ever gotten, but I did find out exactly how far my latest tank went tonight ....441mi before the engine cut out and I pulled over to call the wife to go get me a gallon of diesel
...first time for everthing I guess. Weird thing is, every car I've ever had, the fuel needle would easily go PAST the Empty line. Tonight, the needle hadn't even quite hit the white empty line yet!! Anyone else see this before?

487 miles, 17.81 gallons at fill-up for 27 mpg. I'd love to be one of the folk who gets this kind of mileage consistently, but my average is more like 23 mpg. I adjusted my IP timing recently though, so hopefully I can do a bit better when we go back to straight #2.

I looked in my Tecnical Data Book and having the following info:
124 sedan, total cap. 18.5 gal with a 2.4 gal reserve included 124 wagon total cap 19.0 gal with a 2.6 gal reserve included 126 total cap. 23.7 gal with a 2.6 gal reserve included 201 14.5 gal with a 1.85 gal reserve included. One interesting piece of info is that the 190E 2.3-16 has a 18.5 gal with a 2.24 gal reserve. Just think the distance a 190D would have with this tank. Do not add the reserve to the total capacity. It is included in the total. This the fuel consumption in metric. Someone else can do the conversion. 124 300d and 300TD at 90km/h 6.9 lt/hr at 120km/hr, 8.9 lt/hr city cycle 9.4 lt/hr Sorry no info on the 126 cars Henry
