daBenz's original owner used to say "Hey, it's a Mercedes! Shut the door. Don't slam it, God d***it!" I caught myself saying the same thing this summer, and got a strange look when I looked at my feet and started to giggle. All you have to do is keep the hinges and latches lubricated, by the way.

It does get a bit more complicated than having just the hinges and latches lubricated but that is a good start. I'd also lube up the check straps, on my 83 all straps except the driver door were factory and the grease dried up to a crud. I cleaned them out and used some new bearing grease on them, they worked much better. As for lubing the latches MB suggests using their slide grease which I felt a difference in the door once closing. I've used normal grease in the hinges before but never noticed any real difference. I think a good deal of the real annoying doors need to be realigned but in hopes of it just being a warn rubber insert in the striker I'll try one of those.

I know the striker is adjustable, but I assume shims on the hinge are used for aligning? The rear drivers side on mine is was off.
Don't ask why.

My driver's door has recently started to sound different when it closes. It sounds louder and harder slightly. How would I begin to look at this?

On my 300TD (daily driver) the doors will close with the slight force of a spring breeze. A healthy CHUNK sound. Just about the only thing I can show off on this car, except the fact that it's a Mercedes-Benz that gets 25mpg and it only cost me about $1600.

On the other hand, my 300D needs so much force in closing the doors... Every time I want to close the doors I act as though I'm throwing a discus in the Olympics - I turn around, holding the door with an extended arm, then I swing around and slam the door shut with all my might and hope it closes. The car does seem air-tight, but I mean, this is ridiculous. The door doesn't clank or scrape against anything, just seems like theres a bunch of rubber in the way. I don't know, I just don't know.

My doors close just fine without having to throw all of my a** into it. On occasion I have to reopen and close which ever door is open due to them having such a good airtight fit. Every now and then when I do have a passenger not familiar with riding in such a fine automobile closes the door a little harder than need be I remind them that they need not slam the door like they are accustomed to. After I tell them that a new window costs about $500 (nice round figure to me ;-) ) they tend to be a kinder, gentler passenger from then on.
