Do You Slam Your Car Door
I hate it when people are riding with you and they get out and crank on the door like there trying to fuse the metal together. Whats the deal with that why are people so stupid all you have to do is close it with enough pressure to engage the lock. Then you try to tell them to take it easy slugger and they look at you like your A nut. Oh well at least my diesel [now its diesel related ] benz can take it.

Are you saying your doors will close completely WITHOUT being slammed?
I have just the opposite problem... most people don't close my doors hard enough, and often it'll take people new to my car two or three tries before they understand I really mean it when I tell them to put some oomph into it!

You guys need to get W140's with the door assists working properly. Then there is no need to slam, just let the doors catch.

Iam sure your right I doubt it does any damage. My doors close just fine nothing bent dont need to lift to close or whatever they close just fine. But why put the extra stress on something when it does not need it the car is already 22 years old I don't need to do A lab test on its already been opened and closed A minimum 65,000 times. 365x 22 years = 8030 days x the the amount the door was opened and closed in A given day which is about 8 at the very least = 64,240 times the door has been opened and closed.

Along the same lines, every year or so, some jerk-off of a friend decides he wants to see how far he can pull my parking brake up!!! Always stretches out the cable and whenever the car's in the shop they have to fix it.. grrr... -Aaron |

Mine seems to require more of a wack than usual to close the two "good" doors.
The two that have been replaced on the drivers side, the drvrs will close fairly easy compared to the pass side, but the drivers rear is mis aligned a hair and needs a good wack. I'll shim or adjust it eventually. Yes everything is lubed and adjusted otherwise. And on the subject, did I not see a ball bearing-lookin check valve right on the door hinge for getting grease inside it the other day? A grease fitting of sorts, but not a zerk type..?

The doors on my 300CD need to be closed fairly hard, or they won't really shut all the way, but I rarely slam the doors shut. Same on my Subaru, however on that, it doesn't take as much to get them shut...

If the little plastic or hard rubber deal on the bottom side of the door catch breaks ( I have had two crumble ) it will make that final ' lockup' impossible.
So it may be that if they are worn they will cause more slam to be necessary to close your door.... I have not seen these available.... I hope they are... but I just took them off my parts wagon and put them on my 240d.... I love it when whole systems allow interchange.... |

In the Benz people are usually very careful when closing the doors, even though they do need quite a wack when all windows are up. (very air-tight cabin!)
But in My Miata, where you can easily close the doors by pushing them with your little finger, people tend to SLAM them so hard the Miata is almost tipping over. I never found out why? Freestyler

Close just fine
Mine close just fine - slight tug, good seal Unlike some riders that SLAM the door. I always remind them that they are not riding in a Ford.

On the SDL, I have to shut the doors fairly hard (but not slam them) when all of the windows are up. My mom's '02 E320 requires more force than the SDL. Sometimes it takes me 2 or 3 tries to get her doors shut. The doors on my Chrysler minivan can be closed with the gentle push of my index finger.

I LOVE the way my doors close (on all of em) with very little effort and every time I park one in the parking deck, its just a solid THUMP that I (and everyone else) hears as I flick the door and walk away. I love it. People still love to see themselves in the ole 250 chromed up and polished driving off to lunch with me (so I've heard around the office). It's nice to know that in today's age of wanting everything NEW all of the time that EVERYONE in this whole place (I work in a hospital) always manages to respect the prestige of the classics. Its funny but my cowoker (with a nice 70 something 240) or I drive our cars in and even when they're parked next to a brand new car, people seem to slow down staring at our babies (even new benz owners).

Different cars...different closing protocols...
Wonderful to close the doors on a '30s Packard and hear the rich double-click of the lockbolt going home...like on a fine cabinet.
My VW (old) beetle required that the door be slammed...'specially if the windows were up. When somebody slams the door on one of my W123s, to quote Hermann Goering (sp), "...I reach for my revolver." |

People generally don't close my door hard enough or right, it doesn't take that much effort but it has been acting up ever since I bought it. It just takes a little steady effort to push or pull it all the way closed, every other door seems to close itself like the normal bank vault MB door. I'm going to start off with a new latch on that door, then a new striker, and then adjust it if need be. I've already greased the check strap, or I think I have. The panel is off right now so maybe I'll check it if I can ever convince it to come back home....
