LOL - Plantman - I'm just 1/2 crazy. Better this than responding to political/war post in the open forum or drinking beer. When I get this one back together I will proably start on the '81 300D engine in the fall (when things cool off a bit).

Believe it or not I schedule car work during the weekends and can keep every weekend booked if I wanted. The wife has finally kinda given in to the fact that this is what I do for pleasure/relaxation and she does not say anything anymore. Other than wearing me down I am getting to the point where I have a helluva time seeing. Working outside in bright daylight helps alot. Oh yea, the wife and I have been together 20 years now.

I do get paid $$ for doing this work so it does provide a little extra income which I share with the wife.

Ohk. now it sounds better than I thought. You actually make a few bucks while working on these great cars.

Good luck

dropped the engine/tranny

back in this morning. Started raining just about the time I had it over the hole. That is the reason for the plastic over the engine. This is what I was trying to accomplish this weekend. Should be able to finish it up over the next couple weeks.

Here is what the car is looking like so far. It will get a full paint job when we get it going again.

Oh yea - there was one bad misque so far during this work. Seems I tracked grease onto the bedroom carpet and then when the wife mentioned it to me I tried to use Simple Green to remove the grease. We don't have the grease anymore. Did ya'll know that Simple Green will change the carpet color to green . Now she wants a new carpet.

try putting alot of water an it and scrub
i use simple green alot (not full strength)

We have white rugs so you can imagine the trouble i get into sometimes. I am a pro at removing grease stains from rugs...:-)

Resolve works good too and you do not have to worry about fading the rug...

Trick is to use plenty of rinse water and pick it up with a towel..

Recently I tried Blue Coral carpet cleaner. Comes in a $4 spry can at Auto Zone. Uses the drycleaning process. Turns to powder then vacuum it..

Hopefully you can save the rug and you bank account too...

Thanks Frank - I'll try the Blue Coral on it.

One thing I forgot to mention about the engine rebuild (it got new sleeves, rings, bearings, exh valve guides, a couple new valves and seals and we resealed the tranny). About 6 months ago I installed a new timing chain because when the car was started cold it idled like crap until it warmed up. After installing the new chain I could manually turn the engine over using the crank bolt and the mark at the cam would be in a slightly different position every time I turned the engine over. During the crank inspection at the machine shop they found the crankshaft sprocket keyway was wallored out. I had a spare crank in the shed so I installed it along with the flywheel and harmonic balancer that goes with it. Hopefully the engine will idle properly during cold start.

still got to get back to that carpet

Got everything under/behind the engine bolted in. Now got to get the radiator sorted out along with all the parts that came off of the parts "front clip".

Had the driveshaft rebuilt at Drive Line Service of Atlanta. Steve, the guy there that I dropped it off with showed me the factory alignment marks on the driveshaft. Said it is typical of the MB cars. I'll put up a pic showing these indications later on a new thread.

engatwork do MB drive shaft's ever benifit from balancing? I have a vibration between 55-60 that feel's like a driveshaft vibration. I was thinking about pulling it and getting it checed out.

How are the body and hood seams after the frame work? Does it all line up properly?

The seams look real good. The body guy (an individual that does this work on the side like I do engine work) has done a really good job on the car. They picked up a front clip from a friend of mikemovers. Everything looks good and I'm sure will look great once the new paint is installed.

What is kinda taking so long right now is that I am installing a parallel flow condenser in it and have the hoses at the local Tubes N Hoses being modified. I may convert this one over the r134 since it will have the correct condenser. I've got to get the fuel system and cooling system done and it will be ready to start.

Hatterasguy - I have had alot of success with having these driveshafts rebuilt/balanced. This one had a worn spot in the bearing that you could feel as you rotated the driveshaft around. This is how I have seen these driveshaft brgs wear.

I had one lose a weight one time (it had been balanced somewhere other than the factory). I heard the weight hit the bottom of the car when it flew off.

PO did the flex disks and, something, to the center bearing on mine. It has a noise, much like the warp engine sound on star trek, at about 60mph. Not all the time, but it's there. It's on my to-do list, somewhere..

Maybe it's not the driveshaft, but I have to start somewhere.
