Larry,
Be careful driving to Dorothy Land...it may be 50 in the air but those bridges aren't gonna give up quite so easily.

This morning in the DFW area.
Here's my daughters new car under its blanket trying to stay warm. So much for working on it today.

DFW area snow.

Got plenty north of Ft.Worth as well. Odd stuff for around here.

As R. Leo is into building boats, and the Benz is warm and dry: Here's a shot of my last boat project. Left outside after duck season. Ooops

Nice skiff! Your design?

Recently, my "building boats" had turned more into "thinking about building boats" while I worked on MBZ projects so I bought one of them milk-bottle kayaks to putz around in trying to recall more of the part where you're "messing about with boats."

It's fun but man is it HEAVY! Lookit what I have to carry around it with!

Nice keel, I'd say.

It was designed by my Grandfather and a friend of his, Ed Monk some years ago. After he died, I got all his boat plans, works and tools. I did a few mods that I wanted, and built it 4 years ago. She's 14-6 and has a sister that's 11-6, down in DeLeon now.

I can't say she has as nice a keel as yours does. But, she does look pretty classy all oild up behind a shinny '80 300D.

Don't just think about it !! Build away !!

I've got enough wool line and SikaFlex to keep you afloat for years!!

Sorry to all, that this isnt really Benz related. But then, they do get taken to the lake via the best diesel powered towers in the world.

Smile Thread hijacking...

Not to worry, "It's my thread, I'll post what I want to" *grin*

Your Granpappy and Ed Monk were running buds, really? Monk is/was legendary; I'm in awe.

For grins, I'd like to build a SOF kayak..a la those in Wooden Boat about a year ago. Intriguing...since the Inuit and Greenlanders built them from driftwood, I'm thinking about building from what I call "urban driftwood" ...ya know, the furniture and other lumber that you see lost off of vehicles and lying on the side of the road.

Crazy? Maybe.

Is your Caravan a 208?

No Benz words here.

Most of Monks light boat works were when my grandfather was just starting to “play“ with boats. He worked under him for a few years later in Monks life. By then Monk was into custom cruisers and trawlers.

I wouldn’t say they were “running buds”, but that’s a whole ’nother story.

As for your choice of lumber. Now that’s cool !! Do it !!

As for the Caravan being a 208. Well, yes and no. It is, but they’re calling them 675s now. It’s 4’ shorter than a 208 Grand Caravan and 675hp, up from the 208’s 600. The shorter 675 is the only one you can float. I got the demo. Had a B100 KingAir for awhile but got tired of two engines to pour money into, and not being able to go where I wanted. This thing kills it on DOCs and is much more fun. Just like a big 172 that floats when you want it to. Not as fast as the B100, but I’m not in that kind of hurry anyway. And, we’ve found it can haul a lot more beer.

You fly ??

It's not all that odd to see snow in Central or North Texas. I don't remember more than a winter or two in my fifty plus years when there was not some snow in the Dallas area or the other parts of Texas where I lived as a child.

Also, when I was a kid, I lived in Killeen a few years and Waco a few years and we had snow and ice there at least once each winter.

In the winter of '83/'84 it stayed well below freezing in the Dallas area consistently for about a month. I remember seeing people skating on ponds that winter.

Also, I was in Houston about ten years ago and was staying on the NorthWest part of Houston and was to pick up a customer at Hobby Airport the next morning. It came a snow and ice storm bad enough that the roads were iced over. I had to leave VERY early in the morning to get to the airport on the opposite corner of Houston to meet the early morning flight.

Have a great day,

Actually -

I think the odd thing about snow here in north Texas is not that we're getting it, but when. And, it's not so odd that we're getting it in mid Feb. but that just a few days ago I was doing some fencing and working up a sweat. Two days from now, I'll go out and do the same. Compaired to what's up north, that's odd weather.

I remember the winter of 84/85 I was a new hire at American Airlines and we got 6 inches of snow. We spent 2 hours at the gate waiting for a spot in the deicing line and another 2.5 hours in the deicing line. We arrived at LaGuardia airport a little later then scheduled.
Then we've had those wonderful ice storms. Just love staying at home with ice around. To many Texans think that you can drive on ice if you have 4 wheel drive.

So where are you located. I have not seen this near perfect 300D you have. And which airport do you fly the J-3 and Caravan out of? And when did McDonald Douglas get into the civilian helicoptor buisness. Sure does look like a Hughes 500 with a Norotor tail. Am I right?

The aircraft are kept on the ranch north of Gainesville off 371.
I'm kept on 12 acres in Keller, not far from you. MD bought out Hughes Aircraft many many moons ago. Yep - it is a 500 series with no tail rotor. They've been in the civil market since the 70s.

And it wont actually be Near perfect until I vacuum it out and replace the piller covers. Sorry to be misleading. Just proud of it.
