I don't know if diesel nerd is quite the right term. But the other day I was putting my 4 yr old in to her seat while the car was idling, and she said,"Mom, can you leave the door open? I love that smell." Meaning the diesel fumes. And my first thought was 'That's my girl!'

But I do not know all there is to know about them, so perhaps diesel junky is a better term. We just get off on the fumes. :p

Here is a list of current CDI engine models used.
Vehicle Model (Ex. E320, A170, C220, etc.)= OM engine number
x160, x170= OM668.94x
x200, x220= OM611.96x
x270 (Also the Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter)= OM612.96x
x320= OM613.96x or OM648?
x350?= OM642.xx (V6 design)
x400= OM628.xx

I believe the OM601, OM602 are in the 190D.

Interesting quote:
No diesels in the USA-
According to the Star, MBUSA delayed the introduction of new diesels in the US. Reasons given were concerns about "clean diesel" fuel, which is not available yet. By the way clean diesel is not really necessary to meet current limits, but required to meet 2007+ limits. The article also said to expect the "E320 CDI" instead of the E270CDI. MB is developing a new OM 642 six cylinder, which is not ready until about 2004. It's a V6 since it's better suited to meet very tight emission limits.
