84 330td wagon slow slow almost dead taking off

While driving my 84 300td wagon lately I've noticed how little power I have when taking off. It seems to take a while to get going and moves very slowly. Accelerator pedal is a little stiff. Would lubricating it take care of the problem? I sometimes have to pump the acclerator pedal. Any suggestions as to why I have this loss of power taking off? I changed the 2 fuel filters and air cleaner the other day.... The car is great once I get passed 15 km/hr and it doesn't always do it. But it still takes off like a tank all the time...

Thanks

Manny

Alda adjust, check the linkage (it's possible you are only opening the IP up a little less than half way!), boost line.

Check timing chain stretch, and replace if more than 8 degrees, if OK, check injection timing.

do a valve adjust, too.

What is it with the 84's? I know this problem is not exclusive to the 84's, but here is 3 of us on this post with 84's having similar problems. I don't feel ready to tackle the ip timing myself so I called an indy and asked if he would do it. His reply was that he would check the timing, but he wouldn't do this first as he didn't think it would solve the problem. So... I'm just going to let him spend a little time diagnosing the problem this Friday and wil report back his findings for my situation.

For you Manny: Search for these things:

throttle linkage
banjo bolt
alda
pump timing

good luck...keep us posted

Maybe.......

Maybe the line from the firewall end of the intake manifold is clogged with goo. At the end of the intake manifold closest to the firewall is a banjo bolt. If I remember correctly it's either 12 or 13 mm wrench size. This bolt secures a "banjo" fitting and line to the end of the manifold. The line runs to a valve on the firewall near the brake master cylinder. The line is supposed to be clear of carbon and goop and transfer manifold pressure so the inj pump can add additional fuel in response to turbo boost. Quite frequently they become clogged with carbon, oil and which prevents the additional fuel from coming on. Causes a very noticable loss of power. It can usually be cleaned out by removing the line and fitting, using some carb cleaner and maybe a fine wire to push through and clear it out. The bolt securing it to the intake manifold needs cleaned too, and maybe even the hole in the intake man. where the bolt attaches. Be careful not to lose the thin soft metal gaskets on either side of the banjo fitting. Easy does it when reinstalling, with the soft materials, I imagine it could be stripped if using too much force.
Hope this helps.

Don't overlook the two bushings on the firewall that the throttle linkage rotates in -- if these are bad, you have somewhat less that half travel of the linkage at the IP, and will have terrible performance!
