My 79/80 has both the engine shock holes on the crossmember.

The other thing, was it the different oil cooler? My 240 has the old tube "oil cooler" style like you would find at autozone vs. the newer radiator style with top-bottom flow.

You can retro in a turbo oil cooler, mounts the same way. If nothing else a 300D NA should fit just fine and have the same line setup as the the 300 turbo.

Going to do it

Well, after some thinking and a lot of insanity, we've decided to do the swap. The big concern is putting a 617.951 in a 123 body. It sounds like life would be MUCH easier if I was dealing w/ a 617.952 from what I could find on the forum. If anyone is in the St. Louis area that would trade a good working .952 for a good working .951 w/ ~256,000 mi on it, I'd be up for a trade. Otherwise, any other advice on relocating motor mounts would be appreciated. Thanks again.

engine mounts

Does anyone have advice on engine mount relocation (aside from make a good weld )? We're going to start disconnecting the SD engine as soon as the weather lets up. Any experienced advice on engine removal is also appreciated. Planning on using this thread as a reference. Thanks guys for documenting all this so well! We'll take pictures and video the process as soon as we start.

I searched in this thread for where a 617.951 mounts differently than a .952 or any 617. Why is there a mount issue with a 617.951 in a W123? If anything, you can use the 240D engine mounts. It's just that a crossmember will need to be sourced because the 617 is longer and pushes the transmission back about 4"-5". All the mounting holes are already in the chassis.

I have the engine (non turbo) out of a 82, euro 300td which I plan to install a 616 with a manual into. I think the only difference in mounting is the mounts for the eng shocks. these two mounts are welded to the eng cross member protruding fwd.

As pointed out by 300D, the 5cyl moves the tranny back (by about one cylinder!) and you'll need to re-do the shift linkage and find a way to mount the trans (I used a stock 240 mount that I machined out and mounted cross-ways. There's a pic of it somewhere. Works fine, no problems with it, bolted up nice and tight, just looks funny from under.

Randy made his own mount I believe.

Frankenbenz experiment has begun

Well, the engines + tranny's for both are now pulled. Looking at the dead 240 engine - some very serious case ventilation! Now going to start measuring and comparing for the driveshaft. I read somewhere it might be a good idea to swap the differential too, so we're going to do that. old300, did you end up putting any sound dampening on your firewall to compensate for the bigger (and closer) engine in your compartment? Just wondering. Thanks for this thread, and good German engineering!

No extra stuff. I am not concerned with a bit of noise, although I reglued the hood pad with some undercoating spray. I put in a 2.88 rear, I'm sure the old 3.69 would have been ridiculous with the turbo 5 cylinder.

if you wanna show us all how fast you are...

I have a 1980 300sd parked outside next to my 82 240d... the turbo engine is going into the 240... I could use all the help I can get, and if you're in boulder....I'm on moorhead/table mesa, I'll hold the stopwatch. Grimgaunt said you can't turn down working on the diesels.

btw: as someone about to do a similar swap, this thread is the bible.

Almost there...

So, perhaps I'm going for the slowest engine swap ever, but! the SD engine is now happily mounted in the 240d. We did have to use the engine bearing arms from my old engine, and I put in new engine mounts on the body (the old ones were SHOT!). Right now I am going through the arduous process of hybridizing the vacuum system - I realized the p.o. had hooptied the big black/white vacuum valve on my 240 by blocking off selected leads w/ a screw and liquid nails. Cute! So I scavenged the equivalent from the SD, and I'm just trying to make sure I'm hooking up things correctly. The engine runs, but the shut-off doesn't work, so I know the vacuum system needs a little more troubleshooting. I've got the diagrams from both the 240 and the SD, now I just have to translate what's similar. Anywho - Old300 - when you swapped out the differential, what seals did you replace? Where did you buy them? I'm having trouble identifying by name the right seals from either NAPA or OReilly. If anyone has part numbers, that would be super helpful! OK, gotta go. Thanks again!

Found a 5 speed Getrag in the junkyard

Hi All,

I found a 5 speed Getrag in the junkyard! I spotted a 83' 300D and thought I might have a look at it. It turned out that it was an import that somebody boated over from Germany.

I quick grabbed all of the parts needed to make the 5 speed conversion happen. So far, its all 100% bolt on.

The only question that I need to ask is will my 240D clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate work on this Getrag? Everything fits the input shaft/spline just fine. I am wondering if I might run into some problems when I finally mate the trannie and engine?

If anyone knows, pass the info on.
Brian
