I know where there is maybe 6 or 8 Packards that, in the 70's, weren't bad. Back then I knocked on the door, an old guy answered telling me to get the h outta there and don't come back. The cars now have trees growing up through them The old guy is probably around 95 years old now and still as grumpy as ever I hear.

What gets into folks? I don't understand why folks do that??

Cheers,

Bill

Thumbs up Addicted

When I can't be in my diesel, I work on it. When I can't work on it, I read this forum. It's here where I find more things to fix. Then I can work on it. Then I can drive it. It seems I am going in circles.....

The fact that I go onto this site at least once A day, although I don't post much I am more of A reader in the back. I guess you can say that Iam also A diesel head! I drive my work truck during the week so I never get to roll, in the benz but on the weekend I park the truck and drive the benz I love to just start it up early in the morning and listen to it come to life for the 22nd year of it's life. The thing I like about these cars are there such workhorses but with luxery in mind, so I try to drive it as much as possible, throw it in drive and go! What funny is most people scoff at these old diesels, loud and slow but I love it.

Yes I am and its not minor, its almost OCD (obsessive compulsive diesel)

--Find myself staring at every 85 or 87 300D that goes down the road
-- Got up at 4 am to work on car on a RAINY day, came home and worked on it again!
---probably cheaper to buy a new car (????) or at least the same...probaly spend some $200 on parts a month between my 85 300D, 87 300D and 91 Volvo 940
---am I strange?

why I love it

...I just can't wait in the morning to turn the keys and to get rewarded with that lovely hammering and nailing associated with getting him ready to work. Given the 25+ years my car has in service, I have yet to find a replacement of the comfort, realiability and economy 'little Brownie' has taken me across, up and down the country many times over and over

I count myself as a Dieselaholic, I just love the sound and feel of them, as well as working on them, and the reactions you can get out of people Its always fun to see people change lanes behind you at night when you let out the power, they try to get out of the smoke stream.

I am not saying I don't like gas cars....give me an SL anyday and I will be happy, so long as I am not buying the gas....

I cannot understand why so many people on this forum take great pleasure in "smoking" other drivers. I drive an MB 300D and take great pleasure in not contributing greatly to the pollution on our highways and in the atmosphere by using Waste Vegetable Oil as my preferred fuel.
I try to drive considerately, within the road rules (unlike most other drivers with whom I share the roads) and only where walking is not an option,
Current fuel prices are a sample of the start of what will happen in the near future, if we continue to waste the "liquid gold"

Have your vehicle adjusted to minimise the emissions, drive economically and considerately, try to minimise your impact on our environment and walk whenever prwactical.

Global warming is REAL, it is having an effect NOW in many places on our planet.
"Smoking" other drivers is not "cool", it is a disgusting, polluting act which only serves to turn people against this marvellous engine which we all revere.

...suggest few deliberately "smoke"...but as owners of

perhaps the last intelligent, civilized vehicles to be produced by industrial society, it behooves us to behave in an intelligent, civilized, mannerly way.

In grade school used to visit an aunt who lived between

Baltimore and Washington via the B&O railroad's "rail diesel cars"...a kind of self propelled coach that could operate on suburban service either as a single car or a train...the smell of diesel exhaust while walking down the platform...along with the odor of creosote...are very early memories.

At least you're only at the "almost" mark...I'm so deep in that there's no turning back, and have been this bad for the last 10 years, almost (since my early teens)...the last g@$$er I've owned, I sold in '99, and haven't looked back

Like this pair of Budd RDC-2s:

Oh gawd, you know you're hopelessly hooked on diesels when you already know how these things work...each power truck is diven via a big fluid drive torque converter and cardan shafts from a '6-71 pancake GM Detroit Diesel'.

Diesels in London's "black cabs"...

I realized while watching the film "28 Days Later" that a London "black cab" used in the movie was diesel-powered. I understand these vehicles (AND the lovely old double-decker bus) are going out of style / service, but I'd like to know more...who makes the London cab diesel engines...in fact, who built the whole cars and over what period.

I always thought '80s Peugeot 505 diesels were really beautiful cars (supurb ergonomics...a dashboard change holder that belongs in the MOMA). Think their worst point was limited dealer / service network...PLUS the tendency to rust. Any thoughts on their engines?
