Mechanical problem solving is not for everyone. Some people just struggle with it. It's a different stroke if ya ain't used to it

Yeah, I know. My mother is a good example, the woman can barely pump gas.

You'd think thought that a fellow trying to do that kinda work would figure when he hit his limit.

I agree. A Man has got to know his limits.

On the other hand, how many times have we accomplished something that we didn't think we could do? This kid's mistake was that he did not research the project properly. Could have at least had a professional check to see that everything was put back together correctly before cranking away!

My employer was so depressed, I had to do the job the second time--much slower but without incident.

It should be a felony for some people to pick up a wrench.

I agree that having a double-checker is handy - but there are people like me who honestly don't have a mechanical inclination.

With somebody who understands what's going on telling me what to do, I can go through it step by step with help - but my dad can look at a fill-in-the-blank and tell you how it should work, why it doesn't, what went wrong, and what has to happen to make it work again. I can't do that - if he tells me "take it apart there, do this to that and these things to the other, and put it back together" - I can do it. But I can't just look at it and make those same decisions.

In all fairness. When learning, sometimes mistakes are made. Hats off to someone trying to do something the first time around instead of someone telling him that he can't do it. Besides, it's an older jag

bottom line with nearly any engine, especially an overhead cam equipped one...
read the service manual. if you do not understand the instructions, DO NOT PROCEED!

Is this correct? Are you a child prodigy? I did take my own training wheels off. But I don't like to brag.

I used to think I wasn't mechanically inclined, but after years of shadetree wrenching I've actually started to get a good feel for it. Being "mechanically inclined" is 90% experience, I think. The other 10% is having a good capacity for absorbing and remembering information.

The damage at the top of this thread was the result of ignorance. If the kid is at all bright he'll never make that mistake again; hopefully someone has explained to him what he should have done. And hopefully he hasn't been scared off working on cars for life, because it's a fun hobby.

Hah hah! Me too! My mom loves to tell that story.

As a kid I was great at taking stuff apart. Not so hot at putting it back together, though.
