My 115 240D (OM616) will do a nice job on tailgaters by simply letting off of the throttle. After about 10 miles at 70 mph, completely closing the throttle produces an small but effective fog.

Feather the throttle a little, then tromp on it.

It works great on my evening commute on Route 80, NJ.

If you have a manual transmission, you may be able to enjoy a process which I perfected several years back while driving a 24' "straight truck" with a six cyl diesel & turbo as part of my job delivering & servicing large medical devices. After a stop I'd start out in second or even third gear (out of four gears), really lugging the engine almost stalling, with the pedal floored. Soon the truck would virtually launch - comically quickly, at least three times as fast as normal; behind was a cloud of smoke so thick and large it would totally obliterate the rearward view and anyone unfortunate enough to be in it. We named the process"Spooging" (pronounced spoojing) and I taught any visiting techs how to do it and they took the skill back to their respective locales. I especially relished the look on the smokers' faces as I poured the thick smokescreen out on them as they stood on the loading docks savoring their cigarettes. I had to push extremely heavy stuff and strap it down and I despised their polluting my atmosphere as I did my physical labor. They'd scatter like ants after my smoky launch. probably the only exercise they ever got. But I digress.

I am not proud of the abuse of the truck or the poor souls who I spooged but it sure took the drudgery out of an otherwise unbearable city route on a job with 24 hour call. I can't pin down the exact reason it's so darn funnny but geez I still laugh out loud thinking about it.

Smoke screen

My old 190D would leave a beautiful cloud of soot at about 65 mph by just leaving off the foot feed. I could get about three gos out of it, each one diminished. The 300SD I have now won't smoke unless I get it above 3500 in third gear. I would like to rig up a used oil spray for tailgaters, but never had the nerve to do it.

But seriously, there isnt a good way to make one smoke, mine does not do much either, you can only see it at night in headlights..
How much is seen by the driver behind, WITH the headlights. It the diesel smoke any way near as visible to them? I have never really noticed it when I have followed a diesel.

Amazing the difference.

My SDL had some loose connections in the exhaust when I bought it last June. Ofter the shop replaced some pipes and exhaust system and muffler were actually being used.

The soot buildup was unbelievable from the exhaust not pushing through at full force. I would love to have had a tailgater behind me the first few times I accelerated hard after the repair. First time I thought I had a blown engine. Whoever was behind me must have had a black car afterwords.

OLD OIL:

PEH said he burned his used oil. I would think that would do it.
But as for tail gaters. Slow down more and make them go around or just pull over. They usually feel that if they get on you tail you will spped up or pull over.

The real way do do it. Just pump some diesel/gas mix, solvent, or thin oil into the exhaust after the turbo.

Discussion and pictures

What I really do with BAD tailgaters is I wait until I start to pass a slower car on the highway then I match the slower cars speed. It will really piss them off since they *can't* pass or go faster. This really helps on the 55mph roads where people tend to go 65mph.

Is it me or do others find this thread extremely childish? Do you guys love trashing the environment so much that this is enjoyable to you?

Our diesel smoke enough. No need for this behavior.

Lightbulb Tailgaters, Traffic, and Soot

I often wonder if people are oblivious to the signs that say "Slower Traffic Keep Right" ...

Soot like this?

I think visible smoke casts diesels in a bad light (no pun intended), and should be avoided. The stigma against oilburners is bad enough without the excess soot.

Why don't you have something positive to add for once?
If you are so worried about the environment why don't you go drive an electric car instead of a 240D.
This thread is all in fun.
Quit raining on so many of our parades.

I am successful by down shifting to 2nd and running at around 5000 rpm. Haven't been rear ended yet.

I don't think raping the Earth is a good thing. Certainly, there is nothing funny about pollution.

I can see it now....a bunch of mildly retarded people driving old Mercedes diesels with huge clouds of black smoke trailing them.

And, lietuviai, who the hell put you in charge? You say it is in fun but some of these guys sound serious.

By the way, Liet, if you really want to polute, I'm sure lighting up your underwear in the backyard should accomplish the same effect.
