dumb valve adjust question 300DT

Sorry, I cant quite figrure out what to seach by that wont get a thousand results.

I've read a hundred times in here and in the manuel not to turn the engine backward with the nut on the crank. ahhhhhhh.... what is backward? When looking from the front of the car toward the rear, is backward counter-clockwise or clock-wise?

Sorry I've never watched the engine run to now what was forward.

Coach,

You can always tell by the pitch on the fan blades which way the engine runs. The engine will turn to pull the air thru the radiator.

One exception to this is some constuction equipment which might have a blower fan that blows the air thru the radiator from the engine side.

Question dumb founded, or just plain dumb:)

Too much of a PIA to get a socket and wrench in there. Im going to cheapo auto and get a remote starter switch.

I have a socket that fits that is long enough but add the socket wrench and you have fan blade interference. Add a short extension and you have radiator interference.

but for future reference; how do yall get a socket and wrench in there, and where do you aim the arm of the wrench, Passenger side, toward the ground orrrr?

It works best for me to turn the crank from under the car.

Quite a workout. 10 valves. 50% success rate on getting a lobe positioned right without looking at it. That makes for 20 up-down cycles.

Phew.......

Geo,

Put the socket wrench in from the bottom. Have the ratchet handle on the driver side and push toward the passenger side.
Usually qbout 3 movements of the ratchet handle will move it to the next valve.

I have a pictorial of the cylinder head drawn on the garage wall with the firing order and the valves marked I for intake and E for exhaust . With this you can easily see which valve is next (cam lobes are up) and know if the valve is I or E because different thickness feelers are used for each.

Ken,

With my pictorial on the wall and moving the crank the same amount each time, I do it in up and down 10 cycles on the steps in my grease pit.

Or the alternator bolt

I just use the alternator pulley bolt with a 7/8 inch wrench or socket. Works pretty good as long as your belts are tight.

coach,
i vote for the remote starter. i got mine for $10. it made things so easy that the hardest part of the valve job was removing the valve cover.

Even more readily available than a remote starter, I used a piece of thicker wire and bridged the contact.

Is there any reason the result are not as accurate, when the remote starter method is used?

you get your girlfriend to help you and she tells you when to stop turning the crankcase.....she also measures the clearances and also remembers how the throttle links are put together

Nothing wrong with the remote starter method. Just don't let the engine actually start. It would probably oil everything within a 50 foot radius.

I unhooked the glow plug harness plug when I was thinking I would end up having to use the method of "turn the key while peering at the lobes under the crack of the lifted hood". Just for heckafer, I left it unplug after attaching the new remote starter; 14buks BTW. (confused?? LOL Heckafer=old family slang "for the heck of it ) I doubt it will start with small bumps of starter either way but heyyyyyy one never knows right.

The ease of starting on your engine is directly proportional to wether you have the oil line disconnected from the oil pressure gage.

I was working on my igntion switch.. had the whole thing ripped apart and the cluster out. And I accidently engaged the starter. Wouldn't you know the engine started up almost instantly.

I sat there for about 5 seconds thinking wow that started easy. My amazement turned to horror as I felt something drip on my leg. I turned to see oil spurting out of the tube all over the inside of the dash. After another few seconds for me to get out and nail the stop lever on the engine I returned to find a nice puddle of oil on my floormat. Drat!
