Since I don't have a commute every day, the 300SD goes out once per week to Connecticut and back. About 250 miles round trip.

As one of the few professionals in this group, can I ask your opinion of driving the SD with a bad head gasket? The symptoms are pressurized cooling system several days after shutdown, loss of one quart of coolant per 750 miles, and both sodium and glycol in an oil analysis.

Does this issue get progressively worse to the point of catastrophic damage? Or, will discoloration appear in the oil prior to that time?

I drive it about 3-4 days a week. In some cases, I may drive it 5 or 6 days a week. It runs great. I don't drive it far though, mostly city driving. The furthest I've ever driven it is Galveston to get some highway driving in (100 mile round trip) although I'd like to drive it to San Antonio (394 mile round trip) or Austin (328 mile round trip). The cruise control is broken, but I drove to Austin in another car with cruise control off, so I figure I can do it again. And plus, it needs some new belts and hoses, so no long drives until that is serviced.

I drive mine everyday. The furthest I've ever driven it was to Charlotte, NC. Of course I didn't have any problems and got 24mpg to boot. Oh well, I'm going to adjust the timing when school let's out since I've adjusted the vlaves and only 1 was a tad bit high after 18,000 miles. After that comes the purge, filters, etc. Then I'm up a creek.
Thanks
David

I have choice of 3 cars as my daily driver and the SD is the one. I like it better than 2001 Acura 3.2TL, 1991 BMW 735i. All cars are in excellent running condition.

My SD has 190K miles, with working AC, cruise etc. I've fixed many prior "botched fixes" by the previous owner's monkey wrench. I still need to find a gray leather door panel for the left rear door. It squeakes due to many broken plastic hooks.

"Flame suites on". I'm running the SD with full boost (took out the waste gate). The only protection is the overboost bypass. This is a "beast" on demand.

Driving it.....

I haven't driven the minivan since I got it, so I guess you could say, if I drive, which is at least 6 of 7 days per week, I drive the SD.

And thanks to Speedy300D, I can do it with my locks locked !!

Absolutely my car is a daily driver at 321k miles...I have a 110 mile round trip daily commute for which my SD is perfect. It is safe, safe, safe and typically gets mid- to high-20 mpg fuel economy. A once a month oil/filter and fuel filter change and I'm down the road...

Well, from this day forward, I've been driving the '83 300SD with 139,000 miles on it because my dead-beat '94 BMW 540i decided to take an extended holiday ("trans program"). Otherwise, I drive the Benz-o 3 to 5 times a week.

Since I got my car 15 months ago I've piled on 30,700+ miles. No signs of weakness at all (well, the compressor just sprung a leak, but I knew that was coming, PO used a Four Seasons rebuild). I've had absolutely no qualms about grabbing the wife and kid and pointing it 600 miles away. Would take it anywhere right now.
